How to troubleshoot UKUConnect internet performance issues
Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your UKUConnect broadband connection, we suggest that you run a UKUConnect Broadband Speed Test to measure your current internet speed.
You may also want to confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from UKUConnect.
You can get this information by checking a UKUConnect broadband bill, your UKUConnect contract or by contacting UKUConnect.
Possible causes of UKUConnect’s slow internet speed
Is it the UKUConnect internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You may need to consider the number of applications are currently running on your device.
The performance problem could be due to the over-utilization of your system resources i.e RAM/CPU and not a problem with UKUConnect’s broadband connection.
If you are on a computer then you can use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory utilization.
On other device, you should try restarting the device which should hopefully kill all programs that may have been hogging your device resources.
Run the UKUConnect Speed checker on your computer and your phone to check how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.
Hopefully this should give you some information to work with in terms of whether the problem lies with your PC/Smartphone or the UKUConnect internet connection.

Is your Wi-Fi network the cause of the performance issue?
The cause of the performance problem could be your Wi-Fi network as opposed to the UKUConnect internet connection.
You can rule out the Wifi by simply connecting your PC directly to the UKUConnect broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the UKUConnect Speedtest again.
If the speed test result is better when you’re connected using a network cable, this proves that the issue may be with the Wifi network.
A few other things to investigate:
- Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Is the wireless network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when your are stood right infront of the UKUConnect broadband router?
Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wifi network? How secure is your wireless network password? It may be time to change it.
Neighbours could be using your wireless network and using up all your UKUConnect speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your UKUConnect internet connection! Worse than that, they could be conducting illegal activities using your UKUConnect internet connection.
Here are 3 applications to utlise to scan your Wi-Fi network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wireless network scanning application WiFi Analyzer
The above software scan your Wi-Fi network and show you a list of the devices connected.
Do I need a wireless network booster for my UKUConnect broadband?
You may find that there are Wi-Fi coverage gaps in your home, a wireless network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best fix to increase your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage gaps.
The Wifi network extender picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to increase it’s coverage.
Place the Wifi network booster where your Wifi signal from your UKUConnect broadband router is becoming weaker.
Place it approximately where your Wifi signal is dropping down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your house with a tablet to find where this is.
When did you last upgrade the UKUConnect broadband router?
The UKUConnect and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Ensure that the UKUConnect broadband router is running on the most up-to-date software.
Most UKUConnect broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging on the UKUConnect broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the upgrade.
If you can’t do this, contact UKUConnect and they will do this for you or guide you through the process.
As well as upgrading the software, if you have had router for a long period, it’s probably worth speaking to UKUConnect to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the problem outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common reason for UKUConnect broadband performance problems in your area and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.
If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, contact UKUConnect who will be able to run the relevant connection tests to see if there is a fault on the UKUConnect broadband connection.
Is the issue because of UKUConnect Internet congestion?
If you’re finding that the UKUConnect broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g weekends and evenings, it may be because of congestion during peak times.
