How to troubleshoot UKUConnect broadband performance issues
Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your UKUConnect broadband connection, we recommend that you perform a UKUConnect Broadband Speedtest to measure your current broadband speed.
It is also a good idea confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed you are paying for from UKUConnect.
You can get this info by checking your UKUConnect broadband bill, your UKUConnect contract or by contacting UKUConnect.
Potential causes of UKUConnect’s slow broadband performance
Is it your UKUConnect internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to check how many apps are running on your device.
The speed problem could be due to over-utilisation of your system resources e.g Memory/CPU Processor and not a problem with UKUConnect’s internet connection.
If you are on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory utilization.
On other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully should shut down all apps that may be hogging system resources.
Re-run the UKUConnect Speedtest on your PC and your mobile to see how the speed test results differ between the two devices.
This should hopefully provide you with more information to help determine whether the problem lies with your PC/Smartphone or the UKUConnect broadband connection.

Is the Wi-Fi network the cause of the slowness?
The cause of the performance issue may be your Wi-Fi network as opposed to the UKUConnect broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the wireless by connecting your PC directly to the UKUConnect broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the UKUConnect Speed test again.
If the speed test result is better when you are connected using a network cable, this proves that the problem may be with the Wifi.
Possible things to look further into:
- Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
- Is the wireless network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
- Does your performance get better when your are stood right infront of the UKUConnect wireless router?
Who is connected to my Wifi network?
Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been hacked? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How secure is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.
Neighbors could be on your Wifi network and using up all your UKUConnect speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your UKUConnect broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities over your UKUConnect internet connection.
There are three applications to use to analyse your Wifi network to check who’s connected:
- Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- WiFi troubleshooting tool WiFi Analyzer
The above apps will scan your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the devices connected.
Should I get a wireless booster for my UKUConnect broadband?
If you discover that there are Wifi coverage gaps at your home, a wireless network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to boost your Wifi signal to cover any coverage gaps.
The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up your existing wireless signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to extend it’s reach.
Position the Wifi booster/extender near where your Wifi signal from your UKUConnect internet router is starting to become weaker.
Position it approximately where your Wifi signal is dropping down to less than two bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to determine where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the UKUConnect internet router?
The UKUConnect and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Ensure that your UKUConnect broadband internet router is running on the most up to date software.
Most UKUConnect broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging on the UKUConnect broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the update.
If you cannot do this, contact UKUConnect and they will do this for you or talk you through the process.
As well as upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it’s worth speaking to UKUConnect to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common reason for UKUConnect broadband performance problems in your home and it’s more common for broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.
If you are unsure if this is applicable to you, contact UKUConnect who will be able to conduct the relevant connection checks to see if there is a problem on the UKUConnect internet line.
Is it due to UKUConnect Internet congestion?
If you are finding that the UKUConnect broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods i.e. over weekends and during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak hours.
You should contact UKUConnect to find out your minimum speed.
