How to troubleshoot Hyperoptic internet performance issues

Hyperoptic Internet speedtest - Slow Internet speed

Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your Hyperoptic internet connection, we suggest that you perform a Hyperoptic Internet Speed Test to confirm your current broadband speed.

You may also want to confirm the minimum download speed that you are paying for from Hyperoptic.

You can get this information by checking your Hyperoptic broadband bill, your Hyperoptic contract or by contacting Hyperoptic.

Potential causes of Hyperoptic’s slow broadband speed

Is it the Hyperoptic internet connection that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to consider the number of apps are running on your device.

The performance problem may be due to over-utilisation of your system resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU and as opposed to a problem with Hyperoptic’s internet connection.

If you are on a laptop then you can use the task manager to check your Processor and RAM usage.

On other device, you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully kill all applications that may have been hogging your device resources.

Re-run the Hyperoptic Speed checker on your computer and your phone to see how the speedtest results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should give you more info to work with in terms of whether the problem is with your device or the Hyperoptic broadband connection.

Is your Wifi network the cause of the slowness?

The root cause of the performance issue may be your wireless network and not the Hyperoptic broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by connecting your PC directly into the Hyperoptic broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the Hyperoptic Speed test again.

If the result is better when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this shows that the issue could be with the Wifi.

Possible things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does the speed improve when you’re standing directly in-front of the Hyperoptic internet router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been hacked? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How secure is your Wi-Fi network password? It may be time to update it.

Others could be using your Wifi network and eating up all the Hyperoptic speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Hyperoptic internet connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities over your Hyperoptic broadband connection.

Hyperoptic WiFi issues

There are three applications that you can utlise to scan your Wifi network to see who is connected:

The above apps scan your wireless network and display a list of the connected devices.

Should I get a Wifi network booster for my Hyperoptic broadband?

If you find that you have wireless black holes in your house, a wireless extender also known as a Wifi Booster may be the best solution to increase your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black holes.

The wireless network extender picks up the existing Wifi network signal just as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to increase it’s reach.

Position the Wi-Fi network booster/extender near where your Wifi signal from the Hyperoptic broadband router is starting to become weaker.

Position it approximately where your Wifi signal drops down to less than 2 signal bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to try and establish where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the Hyperoptic broadband router?

Hyperoptic broadband router upgrade

The Hyperoptic and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Ensure that the Hyperoptic internet router is running on the most up-to-date software.

Most Hyperoptic internet routers allow you to perform the software update by simply logging on the Hyperoptic broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you cannot do this, get in touch with Hyperoptic and they will perform the upgrade for you or talk you through the process.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long time, it’s probably worth talking to Hyperoptic to request for a router upgrade.

Is the root cause of the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for Hyperoptic broadband performance problems in your area and it’s more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact Hyperoptic who should be able to carry out the relevant line tests to check if there is a fault on the Hyperoptic broadband line.

Is the issue due to Hyperoptic Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the Hyperoptic broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times e.g weekends and evenings, it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact Hyperoptic to check your guaranteed speed.
