Troubleshooting Skymarket broadband speed issues

Skymarket Internet Speedchecker - Slow Internet speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your Skymarket broadband connection, we suggest that you run a Skymarket Broadband Speed Test to confirm your current broadband speed.

It is also a good idea confirm the minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from Skymarket.

You can get this information by checking a Skymarket broadband bill, your Skymarket contract or by contacting Skymarket.

Likely causes of Skymarket’s slow broadband performance

Is it your Skymarket broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check the number of apps are running on your device.

The performance issue may be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU and not a problem with Skymarket’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and Memory usage.

On any other device, you could try restarting the device which should hopefully terminate all applications that may be using up system resources.

Re-run the Skymarket Speed checker on your PC and your phone to see how the speedtest results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should give you more information to help determine if the problem lies with your PC/Smartphone or the Skymarket internet connection.

Is your wireless the problem?

The cause of the performance issue may be your wireless as opposed to the Skymarket broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wifi by connecting your computer directly into the Skymarket broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the Skymarket Speed test again.

If the result is better when you are connected via an ethernet cable, this shows that the issue could be with your Wifi.

A number of things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Is your wireless signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does your performance get better when you’re stood right in-front of the Skymarket internet router?

Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How strong is your wireless network password? It could be time to update it.

Neighbors could be on your Wifi network and using up all the Skymarket speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your Skymarket broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be conducting illegal activities using your Skymarket internet connection.

Skymarket WiFi no connection

There are 3 applications that you can potentially use to analyse your Wi-Fi network to check who’s connected:

The above apps analyse your Wi-Fi network and produce a list of the everything on your wifi.

Do I need a Wifi network booster for my Skymarket broadband?

If you find that you have Wifi coverage holes at your home, a Wi-Fi network extender also known as a wireless Booster is the best fix to increase your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage holes.

The Wifi network booster simply picks up your existing wireless signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to increase it’s coverage.

Position the Wifi booster/extender where your wireless signal from your Skymarket broadband router is becoming weaker.

Position it near where your Wi-Fi network signal is dropping down to two signal bars. Walk around your house with a mobile phone to try and establish where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded the Skymarket internet router?

Skymarket broadband router upgrade

The Skymarket and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your Skymarket internet router is running on the most up to date software.

The majority of Skymarket broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging into the Skymarket broadband router and simply clicking on a button to start the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, contact Skymarket and they will perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it may be worth speaking to Skymarket to request for a router upgrade.

Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for Skymarket broadband performance problems in your area and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Skymarket who will be able to conduct the relevant line checks to check if there is a issue on the Skymarket broadband line.

Is the performance issue due to Skymarket Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the Skymarket internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods i.e. over weekends and during the evening, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should contact Skymarket to check your minimum speed.
