How to troubleshoot 4theNET internet speed problems

4theNET Internet speed test - Slow broadband speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your 4theNET internet connection, we recommend that you perform a 4theNET Internet Speedtest to confirm your current internet speed.

You may also want to find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you are paying for from 4theNET.

You can get this information by checking your 4theNET broadband bill, your 4theNET contract or by contacting 4theNET.

Likely causes of 4theNET’s slow internet speed

Is it the 4theNET broadband that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to consider how many apps are running on your device.

The performance problem may be due to over-utilisation of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU and as opposed to an issue with 4theNET’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a computer then you can use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM usage.

On other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will terminate all applications that may have been hogging system resources.

Re-run the 4theNET Speed checker on your PC and your mobile phone to see how the speed test results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully provide you with some info to help determine whether the issue lies with your device or the 4theNET broadband connection.

Is the Wifi the cause of the issue?

The cause of the performance issue could be your wireless network as opposed to the 4theNET internet connection.

You can rule out the wireless network by simply connecting your computer directly to the 4theNET broadband router with an ethernet cable and then run the 4theNET Speedtest again.

If the speed checker result is better when you are connected via an ethernet cable, this shows that the problem may be with your Wi-Fi network.

Possible things to investigate:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
  • Is the Wifi signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does the speed improve when your are stood directly infront of the 4theNET wireless router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How secure is your wireless network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbours could be using your Wi-Fi network and eating up all your 4theNET speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your 4theNET internet connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities using your 4theNET broadband connection.

4theNET wireless no connection

There are three applications that you can potentially utlise to analyse your Wifi network to check who’s connected:

The above apps scan your Wi-Fi network and show you a list of the everything on your wifi.

Do I need a Wifi booster for my 4theNET broadband?

You may find that there are Wi-Fi coverage gaps at your property, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a wireless Booster is the best fix to strengthen your wireless signal to cover any black spots.

The wireless booster simply picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to increase it’s coverage.

Place the wireless network booster near where your Wifi network signal from your 4theNET broadband router is becoming weaker.

Position it near where your wireless network signal is dropping down to less than two bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to find where this location is.

When was the last time you upgraded the 4theNET broadband router?

4theNET ISP router upgrade

The 4theNET and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Ensure that your 4theNET broadband router is running on the most up-to-date software.

The majority of 4theNET internet routers will allow you to perform the software upgrade by logging into the 4theNET broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the upgrade.

If you cannot do this, contact 4theNET and they will do this for you or talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it’s worth talking to 4theNET to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the fault outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for 4theNET broadband performance issues in your area and it’s more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact 4theNET who will be able to carry out the appropriate connection checks to check if there is a issue on the 4theNET internet connection.

Is the issue because of 4theNET Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the 4theNET internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods e.g over weekends or evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact 4theNET to find out your minimum speed.
