How to troubleshoot AAISP broadband performance problems

AAISP Internet speed test - Slow Internet speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your AAISP internet connection, we suggest that you perform a AAISP Internet Speed Test to benchmark your current connection speed.

You may also want to find out the minimum download speed that you on your broadband package from AAISP.

You can get this info by checking a AAISP broadband bill, your AAISP contract or by contacting AAISP.

Likely causes of AAISP’s slow broadband performance

Is it your AAISP internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to consider how many applications are currently running on your device.

The speed issue could be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e RAM/CPU and not an issue with AAISP’s internet connection.

If you’re on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and RAM usage.

On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully should shut down all programs that may have been using up system resources.

Re-run the AAISP Speed checker on your PC and your mobile phone to see how the speed test results differ between the 2 devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with more information to work with in terms of whether the problem lies with your device or the AAISP broadband connection.

Is your wireless the cause of the issue?

The cause of the performance problem could be your Wifi as opposed to the AAISP broadband connection.

You could rule out the Wifi by connecting your PC directly to the AAISP broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the AAISP Speed test again.

If the speed is better when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this shows that the problem may be with your Wifi.

Possible things to check:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is your wireless network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does the speed improve when you’re standing directly infront of the AAISP internet router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.

Neighbors could be using your Wifi network and eating up all your AAISP bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your AAISP internet connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities over your AAISP broadband connection.

AAISP wireless not working

There are three apps that you can utlise to scan your Wi-Fi network to check who is connected:

The above software scan your Wifi network and display a list of the devices connected.

Should I get a Wi-Fi network booster for my AAISP broadband?

If you find that there are Wi-Fi black spots at your house, a wireless network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best fix to increase your Wifi signal to cover any coverage gaps.

The Wifi network booster picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to extend it’s reach.

Position the Wifi booster near the position where your Wifi signal from your AAISP internet router is starting to become weaker.

Position it approximately where your Wi-Fi network signal is dropping down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your property with a tablet to determine where this is.

When did you last upgrade the AAISP broadband router?

AAISP router upgrade

The AAISP and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Ensure that the AAISP broadband internet router is running on the most up to date software.

The majority of AAISP broadband routers will allow you to perform the software update by logging into the AAISP broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with AAISP and they will be able to do this for you or talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it may be worth speaking to AAISP to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for AAISP broadband performance issues in your area and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered through copper phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, contact AAISP who should be able to carry out the relevant line tests to check if there is a problem on the AAISP internet connection.

Is it due to AAISP broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the AAISP broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain times e.g weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact AAISP to find out your guaranteed speed.
