How to troubleshoot Fibreband broadband performance issues

Fibreband Internet speedtest - Slow Internet speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your Fibreband internet connection, we recommend that you perform a Fibreband Broadband Speed Test to confirm your current connection speed.

You may also want to confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you are paying for from Fibreband.

You can find this info by checking a Fibreband broadband bill, your Fibreband contract or by contacting Fibreband.

Potential causes of Fibreband’s slow internet speed

Is it the Fibreband broadband that is running slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to consider the number of apps are currently running on your device.

The speed problem could be due to the over-utilization of your device’s resources e.g Memory/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with Fibreband’s internet connection.

If you are on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory usage.

On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will kill all applications that may have been using up system resources.

Re-run the Fibreband Speedtest on your PC and your mobile to check how the results compare between the two devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with some information to help determine whether the problem lies with your device or the Fibreband broadband connection.

Is your wireless network the issue?

The cause of the performance issue may be your Wifi and not the Fibreband internet connection.

You could rule out the wireless by simply connecting your computer directly into the Fibreband broadband router with an ethernet cable and run the Fibreband Speed test again.

If the performance is better when you’re connected using a network cable, this suggests that the problem may be with your wireless network.

A number of things to check:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Is your Wifi signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does your performance get better when your are stood right in-front of the Fibreband broadband router?

Who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.

Neighbours could be on your wireless network and eating up all your Fibreband speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your Fibreband broadband connection! Worse still, they may be carrying out illegal activities using your Fibreband broadband connection.

Fibreband WiFi Lagging

There are 3 applications to use to analyse your wireless network to check who is connected:

The above applications analyse your Wifi network and show you a list of the connected devices.

Do I need a Wifi booster for my Fibreband broadband?

You may discover that you have Wifi black holes at your home, a Wi-Fi network extender also known as a Wifi Booster may be the best solution to increase your Wifi signal to cover any black spots.

The wireless extender picks up the existing wireless signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to increase it’s coverage.

Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender near where your Wifi signal from the Fibreband internet router is starting to become weaker.

Position it near where your Wifi network signal drops down to two bars. Walk around your property with a smartphone to try and establish where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the Fibreband broadband router?

Fibreband router upgrade

The Fibreband and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Ensure that the Fibreband internet router is running the most up-to-date software.

Most Fibreband internet routers will allow you to perform the software update by logging on the Fibreband broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with Fibreband and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or guide you through the process.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had hardware for a long period, it is worth talking to Fibreband to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the fault external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for Fibreband broadband performance problems in your property and it’s more common for broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact Fibreband who will be able to conduct the relevant connection checks to see if there is a problem on the Fibreband internet line.

Is the issue due to Fibreband Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the Fibreband internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g over weekends and during the evening, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.

You should speak to Fibreband to find out your guaranteed speed.

Test your Fibreband internet connection

After the fault has been fixed either by yourself or Fibreband, retest your internet connection using  at least two separate Speedtests to ensure the fault is resolved:
