How to troubleshoot Hotchilli broadband performance problems

Hotchilli Internet speed test - Slow broadband speed

Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your Hotchilli internet connection, we recommend that you perform a Hotchilli Internet Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.

You may also want to find out the minimum download speed that you are paying for from Hotchilli.

You can get this info by checking a Hotchilli broadband bill, your Hotchilli contract or by contacting Hotchilli.

Possible causes of Hotchilli’s slow broadband performance

Is it your Hotchilli internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to consider how many apps are currently running on your device.

The performance problem could be due to over-utilization of your system resources i.e RAM/CPU Processor and not a problem with Hotchilli’s broadband connection.

If you are on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and RAM utilisation.

On other device, you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully shutdown all programs that may have been using up system resources.

Re-run the Hotchilli Speedtest on your computer and your mobile to check how the results differ between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully provide you with more information to work with in terms of if the problem is with your PC/Smartphone or the Hotchilli internet connection.

Is your wireless network the issue?

The cause of the performance problem may be your wireless as opposed to the Hotchilli internet connection.

You could rule out the Wifi by simply connecting your computer directly to the Hotchilli broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the Hotchilli Speedtest again.

If the speed test result is better when you’re connected by a network cable, this indicates that the problem may be with your Wifi.

A number of things to check:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Is the Wifi network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does your speed get better when you’re stood right infront of the Hotchilli broadband router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How secure is your Wifi network password? It may be time to change it.

Neighbours could be using your Wi-Fi network and using up all your Hotchilli speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Hotchilli internet connection! Worse still, they could be conducting illegal activities over your Hotchilli broadband connection.

Hotchilli WiFi Slow

Here are three applications that you can utlise to analyze your wireless network to see who’s connected:

The above applications scan your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the connected devices.

Do I need a Wi-Fi network booster for my Hotchilli broadband?

If you find that you have Wi-Fi coverage holes in your home, a Wifi extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to boost your Wifi signal to cover any coverage holes.

The wireless extender simply picks up your existing wireless network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to extend it’s reach.

Position the Wifi booster/extender near the position where your Wifi signal from your Hotchilli internet router is starting to become weaker.

Position it approximately where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to 2 bars. Walk around your home with a mobile phone to try and establish where this location is.

When was the last time you upgraded the Hotchilli broadband router?

Hotchilli broadband router upgrade

The Hotchilli and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your Hotchilli broadband internet router is running the most up to date software.

The majority of Hotchilli internet routers allow you to perform the software update by logging into the Hotchilli broadband router and simply clicking on a button to perform the update.

If you can’t do this, contact Hotchilli and they will do this for you or alternatively, guide you through the process.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long period, it may be worth talking to Hotchilli to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for Hotchilli broadband performance problems in your area and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered through copper phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact Hotchilli who will be able to carry out the relevant connection tests to see if there is a fault on the Hotchilli internet line.

Is the issue because of Hotchilli broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the Hotchilli broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. over weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should speak to Hotchilli to find out your minimum speed.
