Troubleshooting Manx Telecom internet performance issues

Manx Telecom Internet Speedchecker - Slow broadband speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your Manx Telecom broadband connection, we recommend that you run a Manx Telecom Internet Speed Test to confirm your current internet speed.

You may also want to find out the minimum download speed that you are paying for from Manx Telecom.

You can find this info by checking your Manx Telecom broadband bill, your Manx Telecom contract or by contacting Manx Telecom.

Probable causes of Manx Telecom’s slow broadband speed

Is it the Manx Telecom internet connection that is slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to check how many apps are currently running on your device.

The speed issue may be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources e.g Memory/CPU and not an issue with Manx Telecom’s broadband connection.

If you are on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM utilisation.

On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully shut down all apps that may have been using up your systems resources.

Run the Manx Telecom Speedtest on your computer and your mobile phone to see how the speedtest results differ between the two devices.

This should hopefully give you some info to help determine whether the problem is with your PC/Smartphone or the Manx Telecom broadband connection.

Is the wireless network the cause of the issue?

The cause of the performance problem could be your internal Wifi network as opposed to the Manx Telecom internet connection.

You can rule out the Wifi by connecting your computer directly to the Manx Telecom broadband router with a network cable and run the Manx Telecom Speed test again.

If the performance improves when you are connected via an ethernet cable, this indicates that the issue may be with the wireless network.

A number of things to check:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
  • Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does the speed improve when you’re standing right in-front of the Manx Telecom wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Wifi network? How secure is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.

Neighbors could be on your wireless network and using up all your Manx Telecom speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Manx Telecom broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities on your Manx Telecom internet connection.

Manx Telecom WiFi not working

Here are three apps that you can utlise to scan your wireless network to check who is connected:

The above apps scan your Wifi network and produce a list of the devices connected.

Do I need a Wi-Fi network booster for my Manx Telecom broadband?

You may discover that there are Wi-Fi coverage holes in your property, a wireless extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best fix to boost your wireless signal to cover any black holes.

The Wi-Fi network extender picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to extend it’s reach.

Position the Wifi extender where your wireless signal from the Manx Telecom broadband router is starting to become weaker.

Place it near where your Wifi signal drops down to two signal bars. Walk around your home with a mobile phone to try and establish where this is.

Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for Manx Telecom broadband performance issues in your property and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered through copper phone lines.

If you are unsure if this is relevant in your case, contact Manx Telecom who should be able to carry out the relevant connection tests to check if there is a issue on the Manx Telecom broadband line.

Is the issue due to Manx Telecom broadband congestion?
