How to troubleshoot Onwave internet speed problems

Onwave Internet speedtest - Slow Internet speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your Onwave broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a Onwave Broadband Speed Test to measure your current internet speed.

Also find out the minimum download speed that you are paying for from Onwave.

You can find this information by checking your Onwave broadband bill, your Onwave contract or by contacting Onwave.

Likely causes of Onwave’s slow internet speed

Is it your Onwave internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.

The performance issue may be due to over-utilization of your device’s resources e.g Memory/CPU Processor and as opposed to a problem with Onwave’s broadband connection.

If you are on a computer then you can use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory utilization.

On other device, you should try restarting the device which should hopefully terminate all programs that may have been using up your systems resources.

Run the Onwave Speed checker on your personal computer and your mobile to check how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with some info to work with in terms of whether the problem is with your device or the Onwave broadband connection.

Is the Wifi network the issue?

The cause of the performance problem may be your Wifi as opposed to the Onwave broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the wireless by simply connecting your PC directly into the Onwave broadband router with a network cable and run the Onwave Speed checker again.

If the speed is better when you are connected by a network cable, this shows that the problem may be with the Wifi network.

A number of things to check:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Is your Wifi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does your speed get better when you’re stood right in-front of the Onwave wireless router?

Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How strong is your wireless network password? It may be time to update it.

Others could be on your Wi-Fi network and eating up all your Onwave bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your Onwave internet connection! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities using your Onwave broadband connection.

Onwave WiFi Slow

There are three applications that you can potentially use to scan your Wifi network to check who’s connected:

The above apps will scan your Wifi network and display a list of the everything on your wifi.

Do I need a Wifi booster for my Onwave broadband?

If you find that there are Wifi coverage gaps in your property, a Wi-Fi network extender also known as a wireless Booster may be the best fix to strengthen your wireless signal to cover any coverage holes.

The Wifi booster picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to increase it’s reach.

Position the wireless network extender near where your wireless signal from the Onwave internet router is becoming weaker.

Position it near where your Wifi signal is dropping down to less than 2 signal bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to find where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the Onwave broadband router?

Onwave ISP router upgrade

The Onwave and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the Onwave broadband router is running the latest software.

The majority of Onwave broadband routers will allow you to perform the software update by simply logging on the Onwave broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with Onwave and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through the process.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it’s probably worth speaking to Onwave to request for a router upgrade.

Is the root cause of the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for Onwave broadband performance problems in your home and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Onwave who should be able to conduct the relevant connection checks to see if there is a fault on the Onwave broadband line.

Is the issue due to Onwave Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the Onwave broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. weekends and during the evening, it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should speak to Onwave to find out your guaranteed speed.
