Troubleshooting ThinkingWISP internet performance issues

Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your ThinkingWISP broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a ThinkingWISP Internet Speedtest to confirm your current internet speed.
You may also want to find out the minimum download speed you are paying for from ThinkingWISP.
You can get this information by checking a ThinkingWISP broadband bill, your ThinkingWISP contract or by contacting ThinkingWISP.
Probable causes of ThinkingWISP’s slow broadband performance
Is it the ThinkingWISP internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You may need to check how many applications are currently running on your device.
The performance issue could be due to over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with ThinkingWISP’s internet connection.
If you are on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and Memory usage.
On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully shut down all programs that may be using up your device resources.
Re-run the ThinkingWISP Speed test on your computer and your mobile phone to see how the results differ between the two devices.
This should hopefully provide you with more information to help determine if the problem lies with your PC/Smartphone or the ThinkingWISP internet connection.

Is your Wifi the cause of the slowness?
The root cause of the performance problem may be your Wifi network and not the ThinkingWISP broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the wireless network by simply connecting your PC directly into the ThinkingWISP broadband router with an ethernet cable and run the ThinkingWISP Speedtest again.
If the result is better when you’re connected via an ethernet cable, this indicates that the issue could be with the Wifi network.
A few other things to check:
- Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
- Is the Wifi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when your are stood directly infront of the ThinkingWISP broadband router?
Exactly who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.
Neighbors could be on your Wi-Fi network and using up all your ThinkingWISP speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your ThinkingWISP internet connection! Worse still, they could be conducting illegal activities on your ThinkingWISP broadband connection.

There are 3 applications that you can potentially use to analyse your Wifi network to see who’s connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network troubleshooting tool WiFi Analyzer
The above applications will scan your wireless network and show you a list of the devices connected.
Do I need a Wi-Fi network booster for my ThinkingWISP broadband?
You may discover that you have wireless coverage holes at your property, a Wifi extender also known as a wireless Booster may be the best fix to strengthen your Wifi signal to cover any black spots.
The Wifi network booster simply picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to increase it’s reach.
Position the Wifi network extender near the position where your wireless network signal from your ThinkingWISP broadband router is starting to become weaker.
Position it near where your wireless signal is dropping down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your property with a tablet to determine where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the ThinkingWISP broadband router?

The ThinkingWISP and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Always ensure that your ThinkingWISP broadband router is running the latest software.
Most ThinkingWISP internet routers allow you to carry out the software update by simply logging on the ThinkingWISP broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.
If you cannot do this, get in touch with ThinkingWISP and they will be able to do this for you or alternatively, guide you through the process.
As well as upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long time, it may be worth talking to ThinkingWISP to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common cause for ThinkingWISP broadband performance issues in your area and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.
If you are unsure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact ThinkingWISP who should be able to conduct the relevant line checks to check if there is a issue on the ThinkingWISP broadband connection.
Is the issue because of ThinkingWISP Internet congestion?

You should contact ThinkingWISP to check your minimum speed.
