How to troubleshoot ViaSat internet performance problems

ViaSat Internet speedtest - Slow broadband speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your ViaSat internet connection, we recommend that you perform a ViaSat Broadband Speedtest to measure your current connection speed.

It is a good idea to also find out the minimum download speed that you are paying for from ViaSat.

You can get this information by checking a ViaSat broadband bill, your ViaSat contract or by contacting ViaSat.

Likely causes of ViaSat’s slow internet speed

Is it the ViaSat internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check the number of apps are running on your device.

The speed issue may be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources i.e Memory/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with ViaSat’s internet connection.

If you’re on a PC then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM utilisation.

On other device, you should try restarting the device which hopefully should shut down all applications that may have been hogging system resources.

Run the ViaSat Speed checker on your PC and your mobile phone to see how the results compare between the 2 devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with more info to help determine whether the issue is with your PC/Smartphone or the ViaSat internet connection.

Is your Wi-Fi network the cause of the performance issue?

The cause of the performance problem may be your Wifi and not the ViaSat broadband connection.

You can rule out the wireless network by simply connecting your computer directly into the ViaSat broadband router using a network cable and run the ViaSat Speed test again.

If the speed checker result is better when you’re connected via a network cable, this shows that the problem could be with your wireless network.

A few other things to investigate:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does your speed get better when you’re standing right infront of the ViaSat broadband router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Wifi network? How complex is your wireless network password? It could be time to update it.

Neighbors could be using your Wifi network and using up all your ViaSat bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your ViaSat broadband connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities over your ViaSat broadband connection.

ViaSat wireless Lagging

There are 3 applications to utlise to analyse your Wi-Fi network to check who’s connected:

The above apps scan your Wifi network and show you a list of the devices connected.

Should I get a wireless network booster for my ViaSat broadband?

You may discover that you have wireless black holes at your house, a wireless extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best solution to boost your wireless signal to cover any black holes.

The wireless network booster simply picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to extend it’s coverage.

Position the Wi-Fi network booster/extender near the position where your Wi-Fi network signal from the ViaSat internet router is becoming weaker.

Place it near where your Wifi signal drops down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to try and establish where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded the ViaSat broadband router?

ViaSat ISP router upgrade

The ViaSat and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the ViaSat internet router is running on the most up to date software.

Most ViaSat broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by logging into the ViaSat broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, contact ViaSat and they will perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long period, it’s worth talking to ViaSat to request for a router upgrade.

Is the fault external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for ViaSat broadband performance issues in your property and it’s more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact ViaSat who should be able to carry out the relevant line checks to see if there is a fault on the ViaSat internet line.

Is it due to ViaSat Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the ViaSat internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. over weekends or during the evening, it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact ViaSat to find out your minimum speed.
