Troubleshooting Xifos broadband performance issues

Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your Xifos broadband connection, we recommend that you perform a Xifos Internet Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.

You may also want to find out the minimum download speed that you on your broadband package from Xifos.

You can get this information by checking a Xifos broadband bill, your Xifos contract or by contacting Xifos.

Potential causes of Xifos’s slow broadband performance

Is it the Xifos internet connection that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check how many apps are currently running on your device.

The speed issue could be due to the over-utilization of your system resources i.e Memory/CPU Processor and not a problem with Xifos’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a PC then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory usage.

On any other device, you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully shut down all applications that may be hogging your systems resources.

Run the Xifos Speed test on your personal computer and your mobile phone to check how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.

Is your Wi-Fi network the problem?

The cause of the performance problem could be your wireless and not the Xifos internet connection.

You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by connecting your computer directly to the Xifos broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the Xifos Speed checker again.

If the speed checker result is better when you are connected by a network cable, this suggests that the issue may be with the Wi-Fi network.

A number of things to look further into:

• Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
• Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
• Does your performance improve when your are standing directly in-front of the Xifos broadband router?

Exactly who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been hacked? Do you have an open wireless network? How complex is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbors could be on your Wi-Fi network and using up all the Xifos bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Xifos broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be conducting illegal activities using your Xifos internet connection.

Do I need a wireless booster for my Xifos broadband?

If you discover that there are Wifi coverage holes at your house, a Wifi extender aka a Wifi Booster is the best fix to strengthen your Wifi signal to cover any coverage holes.

Position the Wifi network extender near where your Wifi network signal from the Xifos broadband router is becoming weaker.

When was the last time you upgraded the Xifos internet router?

The Xifos and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your Xifos broadband router is running on the most up to date software.

Most Xifos broadband routers will allow you to perform the software upgrade by logging into the Xifos broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you cannot do this, contact Xifos and they will do this for you or guide you through the process.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it’s probably worth talking to Xifos to request for a router upgrade.

Is the fault outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for Xifos broadband performance problems in your home and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, contact Xifos who should be able to run the relevant connection tests to check if there is a problem on the Xifos broadband line.

Is the performance issue due to Xifos Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the Xifos internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g weekends or evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.
