Troubleshooting YouFibre internet performance issues

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your YouFibre broadband connection, we recommend that you run a YouFibre Internet Speedtest to confirm your current broadband speed.
You may also want to find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you are paying for from YouFibre.
You can get this information by checking a YouFibre broadband bill, your YouFibre contract or by contacting YouFibre.
Possible causes of YouFibre’s slow broadband speed
Is it the YouFibre broadband that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.
The performance problem could be due to over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU and as opposed to a problem with YouFibre’s internet connection.
If you’re on a PC then you may use the task manager to see your Processor and RAM usage.
On any other device, you should try rebooting the device which hopefully will kill all applications that may have been using up system resources.
Re-run the YouFibre Speedtest on your PC and your phone to check how the speedtest results differ between the two devices.
Hopefully this should give you more information to work with in terms of whether the issue lies with your device or the YouFibre broadband connection.

Is the wireless network the cause of the issue?
The cause of the performance problem may be your Wi-Fi network and not the YouFibre internet connection.
You could rule out the wireless network by simply connecting your computer directly to the YouFibre broadband router using a network cable and then run the YouFibre Speed test again.
If the result improves when you’re connected by an ethernet cable, this shows that the issue may be with your Wifi.
Possible things to investigate:
- Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
- Is the wireless signal from the broadband router obstructed?
- Does the performance get better when you’re stood directly infront of the YouFibre wireless router?
Who is connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wifi network? How complex is your wireless network password? It could be time to change it.
Neighbors could be using your wireless network and eating up all the YouFibre speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your YouFibre broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities using your YouFibre broadband connection.

Here are three applications that you can utlise to scan your Wifi network to check who is connected:
- Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wireless network troubleshooting application WiFi Analyzer
The above software scan your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a Wifi network booster for my YouFibre broadband?
If you discover that you have wireless black spots in your home, a Wifi network extender aka a wireless Booster may be the best solution to increase your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage gaps.
The wireless network booster picks up the existing wireless network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to increase it’s coverage.
Place the Wi-Fi network booster near the position where your Wifi signal from your YouFibre internet router is becoming weaker.
Place it near where your Wifi signal drops down to less than 2 signal bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to try and establish where this is.
When did you last upgrade the YouFibre broadband router?

The YouFibre and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Ensure that the YouFibre internet router is running on the latest software.
Most YouFibre broadband routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging into the YouFibre broadband router and simply clicking on a button to perform the upgrade.
If you can’t do this, contact YouFibre and they will do this for you or guide you through the process.
As well as updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it is worth talking to YouFibre to request for a hardware upgrade.
Is the fault outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for YouFibre broadband performance issues in your home and is more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.
If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact YouFibre who should be able to run the relevant line checks to check if there is a fault on the YouFibre internet line.
Is it because of YouFibre broadband congestion?
If you are finding that the YouFibre internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods i.e. over weekends or evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak hours.
You should speak to YouFibre to check your guaranteed speed.
