How to troubleshoot Your Coop broadband speed problems

Your Coop Internet speed test - Slow broadband speed

Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your Your Coop broadband connection, we recommend that you run a Your Coop Internet Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.

Also find out the guaranteed minimum download speed that you are paying for from Your Coop.

You can get this information by checking a Your Coop broadband bill, your Your Coop contract or by contacting Your Coop.

Common causes of Your Coop’s slow internet speed

Is it your Your Coop internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to check the number of apps are running on your device.

The performance issue could be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources e.g RAM/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with Your Coop’s broadband connection.

If you are on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and Memory usage.

On any other device, you should try restarting the device which hopefully will shut down all apps that may be using up your systems resources.

Re-run the Your Coop Speed test on your computer and your mobile to see how the speed test results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully provide you with some info to work with in terms of if the problem is with your PC/Smartphone or the Your Coop broadband connection.

Is your wireless the cause of the issue?

The root cause of the performance problem could be your Wifi as opposed to the Your Coop broadband connection.

You could rule out the wireless by simply connecting your PC directly to the Your Coop broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the Your Coop Speed checker again.

If the speed is better when you are connected using a network cable, this shows that the issue could be with the wireless.

Possible things to investigate:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is the Wifi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does your performance get better when you’re standing directly infront of the Your Coop wireless router?

Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wifi network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.

Neighbours could be using your Wifi network and eating up all your Your Coop bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Your Coop broadband connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities on your Your Coop broadband connection.

Your Coop WiFi Slow

There are 3 apps to use to scan your Wifi network to check who is connected:

The above software analyse your wireless network and display a list of the devices connected.

Do I need a wireless network booster for my Your Coop broadband?

If you discover that there are Wifi black holes at your house, a wireless extender aka a wireless Booster may be the best solution to increase your wireless signal to cover any coverage gaps.

The wireless network extender picks up the existing wireless signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to extend it’s coverage.

Position the Wifi booster/extender near the position where your wireless network signal from the Your Coop broadband router is starting to become weaker.

Place it approximately where your Wi-Fi network signal is dropping down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to try and establish where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded the Your Coop internet router?

Your Coop ISP router upgrade

The Your Coop and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Ensure that the Your Coop broadband internet router is running the most up to date software.

Most Your Coop broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging into the Your Coop broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the update.

If you cannot do this, get in touch with Your Coop and they will do this for you or talk you through the process.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it’s probably worth talking to Your Coop to request for a hardware upgrade.

Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for Your Coop broadband performance issues in your property and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, contact Your Coop who should be able to carry out the relevant line tests to see if there is a fault on the Your Coop broadband line.

Is the issue because of Your Coop broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the Your Coop internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times e.g over weekends or evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should speak to Your Coop to check your minimum speed.
