Troubleshooting 1-2-Free internet speed issues

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your 1-2-Free internet connection, we suggest that you perform a 1-2-Free Internet Speed Test to measure your current internet speed.
It is a good idea to also confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you are paying for from 1-2-Free.
You can find this info by checking a 1-2-Free broadband bill, your 1-2-Free contract or by contacting 1-2-Free.
Possible causes of 1-2-Free’s slow broadband performance
Is it the 1-2-Free broadband that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to check how many applications are running on your device.
The speed problem could be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU Processor and not an issue with 1-2-Free’s internet connection.
If you’re on a PC then you can use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory utilisation.
On other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully should shutdown all programs that may be hogging your device resources.
Run the 1-2-Free Speed checker on your personal computer and your phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the 2 devices.
This should hopefully provide you with more info to work with in terms of whether the issue lies with your device or the 1-2-Free internet connection.

Is the wireless network the cause of the slowness?
The cause of the performance problem may be your wireless network as opposed to the 1-2-Free broadband connection.
You can rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your computer directly into the 1-2-Free broadband router with a network cable and then run the 1-2-Free Speedtest again.
If the speed test result improves when you’re connected using a network cable, this shows that the issue could be with your wireless.
A few other things to check:
- Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Is the wireless signal from the wireless router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when you’re standing directly in-front of the 1-2-Free internet router?
Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been hacked? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How strong is your wireless network password? It could be time to change it.
Neighbours could be using your wireless network and eating up all your 1-2-Free speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your 1-2-Free broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be conducting illegal activities over your 1-2-Free broadband connection.

There are 3 applications to use to scan your wireless network to check who’s connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network scanning tool WiFi Analyzer
The above software analyse your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the connected devices.
Should I get a Wifi network booster for my 1-2-Free broadband?
You may discover that there are wireless black holes in your property, a Wi-Fi network extender also known as a Wifi Booster is the best solution to boost your Wifi signal to cover any black holes.
The wireless booster picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to extend it’s coverage.
Place the wireless network extender near the position where your Wi-Fi network signal from your 1-2-Free broadband router is becoming weaker.
Position it near where your Wifi signal drops down to 2 bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to try and establish where this location is.
When was the last time you upgraded the 1-2-Free broadband router?

The 1-2-Free and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Always ensure that the 1-2-Free broadband router is running the most up-to-date software.
Most 1-2-Free broadband routers will allow you to perform the software update by simply logging into the 1-2-Free broadband router and simply clicking on a button to start the upgrade.
If you cannot do this, contact 1-2-Free and they will perform the upgrade for you or talk you through the process.
As well as updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long period, it’s worth talking to 1-2-Free to request for a hardware upgrade.
Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for 1-2-Free broadband performance issues in your property and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact 1-2-Free who will be able to run the appropriate connection tests to check if there is a fault on the 1-2-Free broadband connection.
Is the performance issue because of 1-2-Free Internet congestion?
If you are finding that the 1-2-Free broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g over weekends or evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.
You should contact 1-2-Free to check your minimum speed.
