How to troubleshoot ADSL24 broadband speed problems

ADSL24 Internet speedtest - Slow Internet speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your ADSL24 internet connection, we recommend that you perform a ADSL24 Broadband Speedtest to benchmark your current connection speed.

It is also a good idea find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you have subscribed to from ADSL24.

You can get this info by checking your ADSL24 broadband bill, your ADSL24 contract or by contacting ADSL24.

Likely causes of ADSL24’s slow broadband speed

Is it the ADSL24 internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check how many apps are currently running on your device.

The performance issue could be due to over-utilisation of your system resources i.e RAM/CPU and as opposed to an issue with ADSL24’s internet connection.

If you’re on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your Processor and RAM utilization.

On any other device, you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully terminate all applications that may be hogging system resources.

Re-run the ADSL24 Speed test on your personal computer and your mobile phone to see how the speed test results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully provide you with some info to help determine whether the problem is with your PC/Smartphone or the ADSL24 broadband connection.

Is the wireless the reason for the issues?

The cause of the performance issue could be your wireless network as opposed to the ADSL24 broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the wireless by connecting your computer directly to the ADSL24 broadband router with a network cable and then run the ADSL24 Speed checker again.

If the performance improves when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this proves that the issue could be with your wireless.

Possible things to investigate:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Is your Wifi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does the performance get better when your are stood directly in-front of the ADSL24 wireless router?

Who is connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured Wifi network? How secure is your Wifi network password? It may be time to update it.

Others could be using your wireless network and using up all the ADSL24 bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your ADSL24 broadband connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities using your ADSL24 broadband connection.

ADSL24 WiFi issues

Here are 3 applications to use to scan your wireless network to check who’s connected:

The above applications will scan your wireless network and display a list of the devices connected.

Should I get a Wi-Fi network booster for my ADSL24 broadband?

You may find that there are Wifi coverage gaps in your house, a wireless network extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to increase your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage holes.

The wireless extender picks up your existing wireless network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to increase it’s reach.

Place the Wifi extender near where your Wifi network signal from your ADSL24 broadband router is becoming weaker.

Place it near where your Wifi network signal drops down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to find where this location is.

When was the last time you upgraded the ADSL24 internet router?

ADSL24 router upgrade

The ADSL24 and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Ensure that your ADSL24 broadband internet router is running on the most up to date software.

The majority of ADSL24 internet routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging on the ADSL24 broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the update.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with ADSL24 and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through the process.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had router for a long time, it’s probably worth talking to ADSL24 to request for a hardware upgrade.

Is the root cause of the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for ADSL24 broadband performance issues in your area and is more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you are unsure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact ADSL24 who should be able to carry out the appropriate line checks to see if there is a issue on the ADSL24 internet connection.

Is the issue due to ADSL24 Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the ADSL24 internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times e.g over weekends or during the evening, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.

You should speak to ADSL24 to check your guaranteed speed.
