Troubleshooting ADSL24 internet speed issues

ADSL24 Internet speedtest - Slow Internet speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your ADSL24 broadband connection, we suggest that you run a ADSL24 Internet Speedtest to confirm your current broadband speed.

It is a good idea to also confirm the minimum download speed you have subscribed to from ADSL24.

You can get this info by checking your ADSL24 broadband bill, your ADSL24 contract or by contacting ADSL24.

Probable causes of ADSL24’s slow broadband performance

Is it the ADSL24 broadband that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.

The speed problem may be due to over-utilization of your system resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with ADSL24’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a PC then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM utilisation.

On any other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully should shutdown all apps that may have been hogging your systems resources.

Re-run the ADSL24 Speed checker on your personal computer and your phone to see how the speed test results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully provide you with some information to help determine if the problem is with your device or the ADSL24 broadband connection.

Is the Wi-Fi network the reason for the issues?

The root cause of the performance problem may be your wireless network as opposed to the ADSL24 internet connection.

You could rule out the wireless network by connecting your PC directly to the ADSL24 broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the ADSL24 Speed checker again.

If the result improves when you’re connected using an ethernet cable, this shows that the problem may be with the wireless network.

A number of things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is the Wifi signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when you’re standing right infront of the ADSL24 wireless router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been hacked? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How secure is your Wi-Fi network password? It may be time to change it.

Neighbors could be on your Wifi network and eating up all your ADSL24 speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your ADSL24 internet connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities using your ADSL24 internet connection.

ADSL24 wireless not working

Here are three applications that you can use to analyze your Wi-Fi network to see who is connected:

The above apps scan your wireless network and display a list of the everything on your wifi.

Should I get a wireless booster for my ADSL24 broadband?

You may discover that you have Wifi coverage holes at your home, a Wifi extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster is the best fix to boost your Wifi signal to cover any black holes.

The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up the existing wireless network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to extend it’s reach.

Place the Wifi network extender where your wireless network signal from your ADSL24 internet router is becoming weaker.

Place it approximately where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your house with a tablet to try and establish where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the ADSL24 broadband router?

ADSL24 router upgrade

The ADSL24 and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Ensure that the ADSL24 broadband router is running the latest software.

Most ADSL24 broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by logging on the ADSL24 broadband router and simply clicking a button to start the update.

If you cannot do this, get in touch with ADSL24 and they will be able to do this for you or talk you through the process.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long period, it’s worth talking to ADSL24 to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for ADSL24 broadband performance issues in your property and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact ADSL24 who should be able to carry out the relevant line checks to check if there is a issue on the ADSL24 internet connection.

Is the issue because of ADSL24 broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the ADSL24 internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times e.g over weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should speak to ADSL24 to check your guaranteed speed.
