Is it your Ask4 broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to consider how many apps are concurrently running on your device that could be utilizing your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your Ask4 internet bandwidth.

Is your wireless network connection the problem?

The cause of the issue could be your wireless network connection and not the Ask4 broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wi-Fi network network being the cause of the problem by connecting your PC directly to the Ask4 broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the Ask4 speed checker again.

If performance improves when you’re connected by an ethernet cable then this proves that the problem may be with your Wifi connection setup.

Possible things to check are:

  • Are the WiFi channels you are using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Could the Wi-Fi network signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when your are stood directly infront of the Ask4 broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Guest wireless network?

Do I need a Wi-Fi network Booster for my Ask4 broadband?

If you find that you have wireless black holes in your house, then a Wifi extender also know as a Wi-Fi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The wireless booster simply picks up your existing Wifi signal just as it is becoming weak and then re-transmits the Wifi network signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s coverage.

Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your wireless signal from the Ask4 broadband router is becoming weak.  Approxiametly where your wireless signal drops down to two bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your Ask4 broadband router?

The Ask4 and openreach infrastructure is constantly being updates to support new features (some end user facing and others internal).  Ensure that your Ask4 broadband router has the most up to date software.

Is it due to Ask4 Broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the Ask4 internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should speak to your Ask4 to understand if the service you have subscribed to has a minimum speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.
