Possible causes of BeyonDSL slow broadband performance
Is it the BeyonDSL broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to consider how many apps are currently running on your device that could be using your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your BeyonDSL internet bandwidth.
If you are on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your processor and memory utilisation.
On any other device you could try restarting the device which should hopefully terminate all programs that may have been running in the background.
Re-run the BeyonDSL speed checker on your PC and your phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the 2 devices.
This should hopefully provide you with some information to work with in terms of whether the issue lies with your device or the BeyonDSL broadband connection.

Is your Wifi connection the problem?
The cause of the problem could be your wireless network connection and not the BeyonDSL broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the Wifi network network being the cause of the problem by connecting your PC directly into the BeyonDSL broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the BeyonDSL speedtest again.
If the speed is better when you’re connected via a network cable then this proves that the issue may be with your Wifi network connection setup.
Possible things to investigate are:
- Are the Wireless channels you’re using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Could your Wifi network signal from the router be obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when your are stood directly infront of the BeyonDSL broadband or wireless router?
Who is connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Guest Wifi network?
Neighbors could be using your wirelessi network and using up all your BeyonDSL bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all point to your connection.
There are two applications that you can use to scan your wireless network to check who’s connected:
Both apps will scan your Wifi network and show you a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a Wi-Fi network Booster for my BeyonDSL broadband?
If you find that you have Wifi black holes in your house, then a Wifi extender also know as a Wifi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.
The wireless network booster simply picks up your existing wireless network signal as it is becoming weak and then re-transmits the Wifi network signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s coverage.
Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your Wi-Fi network signal from the BeyonDSL broadband router is starting to become weak. Approxiametly where your Wifi network signal drops down to 2 bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.
When was the last time you upgraded your BeyonDSL broadband router?
The BeyonDSL and openreach infrastructure is constantly being upgraded to support new features (some customer facing and others internal). Ensure that the BeyonDSL broadband router has the latest software.
The majority of BeyonDSL broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by logging on the BeyonDSL broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the update.
If you cannot do this, contact BeyonDSL and they will be able to either do this for you or guide you through how to do it depending on the BeyonDSL router model you have.
As well as updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long period, it’s worth speaking to BeyonDSL to request for a router upgrade.
Is the problem external (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for BeyonDSL broadband performance problem in your home and it’s more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.
If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact BeyonDSL who will be able to carry out the relevant line tests to see if there is a fault on the BeyonDSL broadband connection.
Is it due to BeyonDSL Broadband congestion?
If you’re finding that the BeyonDSL internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.
- What is Broadband Contention Ratio and does BeyonDSL have contention?
- What does network latency mean?
You should speak to your BeyonDSL to understand if the service you have subscribed to has a minimum speed or is a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.
Re-testing your BeyonDSL broadband connection
After the problem has been fixed either by yourself or BeyonDSL, retest your internet connection using at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla internet speedtester to ensure the problem is resolved.
