How to troubleshoot Boundless broadband performance issues

Boundless Internet speed test - Slow Internet speed

Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your Boundless internet connection, we suggest that you perform a Boundless Internet Speedtest to benchmark your current internet speed.

Also confirm the minimum download speed you have subscribed to from Boundless.

You can get this information by checking a Boundless broadband bill, your Boundless contract or by contacting Boundless.

Common causes of Boundless’s slow internet performance

Is it the Boundless internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.

The performance problem could be due to over-utilization of your system resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU and as opposed to an issue with Boundless’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory usage.

On any other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully should kill all programs that may be hogging your systems resources.

Re-run the Boundless Speed test on your computer and your mobile to check how the results compare between the 2 devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with some information to help determine if the issue is with your device or the Boundless internet connection.

Is the Wifi network the cause of the issue?

The cause of the performance issue could be your wireless as opposed to the Boundless broadband connection.

You could rule out the Wifi by connecting your PC directly to the Boundless broadband router with a network cable and run the Boundless Speedtest again.

If the speed checker result is better when you’re connected using an ethernet cable, this indicates that the problem may be with your internal wireless network.

A few other things to check:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
  • Is your wireless signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does your performance get better when your are stood directly in-front of the Boundless internet router?

Who is connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open wireless network? How strong is your Wi-Fi network password? It may be time to update it.

Others could be on your wireless network and eating up all your Boundless speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Boundless broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities on your Boundless internet connection.

Boundless wireless issues

There are three applications that you can utlise to analyze your wireless network to see who’s connected:

The above applications analyse your wireless network and produce a list of the everything on your wifi.

Should I get a wireless booster for my Boundless broadband?

You may find that there are wireless coverage gaps in your property, a Wi-Fi network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to strengthen your wireless signal to cover any black spots.

The Wifi network extender simply picks up your existing wireless signal just as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to increase it’s reach.

Place the Wifi booster/extender near the position where your Wifi network signal from your Boundless internet router is becoming weaker.

Position it approximately where your Wifi network signal is dropping down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to find where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the Boundless internet router?

Boundless broadband router upgrade

The Boundless and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your Boundless broadband internet router is running the most up to date software.

Most Boundless broadband routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging into the Boundless broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, contact Boundless and they will be able to do this for you or talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had router for a long period, it’s worth speaking to Boundless to request for a hardware upgrade.

Is the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for Boundless broadband performance issues in your area and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.

If you are unsure if this is relevant in your case, contact Boundless who will be able to run the appropriate line tests to check if there is a fault on the Boundless internet line.

Is the issue due to Boundless broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the Boundless internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. over weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should speak to Boundless to find out your minimum speed.
