Troubleshooting BTA internet speed problems

BTA Internet speed test - Slow broadband speed

Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your BTA internet connection, we recommend that you perform a BTA Broadband Speedtest to confirm your current internet speed.

Also find out the minimum download speed that you are paying for from BTA.

You can get this info by checking a BTA broadband bill, your BTA contract or by contacting BTA.

Probable causes of BTA’s slow broadband speed

Is it the BTA internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to check how many apps are running on your device.

The performance issue could be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources i.e RAM/CPU and not an issue with BTA’s internet connection.

If you’re on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and RAM utilization.

On any other device, you should try restarting the device which hopefully should shut down all applications that may be using up your device resources.

Run the BTA Speedtest on your computer and your phone to check how the speed test results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully give you some info to help determine if the issue is with your PC/Smartphone or the BTA broadband connection.

Is the Wifi network the reason for the issues?

The root cause of the performance problem could be your Wi-Fi network and not the BTA internet connection.

You can rule out the Wifi by simply connecting your computer directly to the BTA broadband router using a network cable and then run the BTA Speed test again.

If the speed checker result is better when you are connected via a network cable, this shows that the problem may be with your wireless network.

A number of things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is your wireless signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does the performance get better when your are stood right infront of the BTA wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How strong is your wireless network password? It may be time to change it.

Neighbors could be on your wireless network and eating up all the BTA bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your BTA broadband connection! Worse still, they may be carrying out illegal activities on your BTA internet connection.

BTA wireless no connection

There are three applications to use to scan your Wifi network to see who’s connected:

The above apps analyse your Wi-Fi network and produce a list of the devices connected.

Do I need a Wifi booster for my BTA broadband?

You may find that you have wireless black spots at your house, a Wifi extender aka a wireless Booster may be the best fix to strengthen your wireless signal to cover any black spots.

The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up the existing Wifi network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to extend it’s coverage.

Place the Wifi network booster/extender near where your Wifi network signal from your BTA internet router is becoming weaker.

Place it approximately where your wireless network signal drops down to 2 bars. Walk around your house with a mobile phone to try and establish where this is.

When did you last upgrade the BTA broadband router?

BTA ISP router upgrade

The BTA and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the BTA internet router is running the most up to date software.

The majority of BTA internet routers allow you to perform the software upgrade by simply logging into the BTA broadband router and simply clicking on a button to start the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with BTA and they will be able to do this for you or talk you through the process.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it’s probably worth speaking to BTA to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the problem outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for BTA broadband performance issues in your property and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact BTA who will be able to run the appropriate connection tests to check if there is a problem on the BTA internet line.

Is it due to BTA broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the BTA internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should contact BTA to find out your guaranteed speed.
