How to troubleshoot C4L internet speed issues

Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your C4L broadband connection, we suggest that you run a C4L Broadband Speedtest to measure your current internet speed.

It is a good idea to also find out the minimum download speed you on your broadband package from C4L.

Common causes of C4L’s slow internet performance

Is it the C4L broadband that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to check how many apps are currently running on your device.

The performance issue may be due to over-utilisation of your device’s resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU and as opposed to a problem with C4L’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a computer then you can use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM utilisation.

On any other device, you should try rebooting the device which hopefully should shutdown all applications that may have been hogging your device resources.

Re-run the C4L Speedtest on your PC and your mobile phone to see how the results compare between the 2 devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with some info to help determine if the issue is with your PC/Smartphone or the C4L internet connection.

Is the Wifi network the problem?

The cause of the performance problem may be your internal Wifi network as opposed to the C4L internet connection.

You could rule out the wireless by simply connecting your PC directly to the C4L broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the C4L Speed test again.

If the speed test result is better when you are connected using a network cable, this proves that the problem may be with the internal wireless network.

A few other things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does your performance get better when you’re standing right infront of the C4L wireless router?

Who’s connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How complex is your wireless network password? It could be time to update it.

Neighbours could be on your Wi-Fi network and using up all your C4L bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your C4L broadband connection! Worse still, they could be conducting illegal activities on your C4L broadband connection.

Should I get a wireless network booster for my C4L broadband?

You may discover that there are Wi-Fi black spots in your property, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a Wifi Booster may be the best fix to boost your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage holes.

The Wi-Fi network extender picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to increase it’s coverage.

Place the Wifi network booster/extender near the position where your Wi-Fi network signal from the C4L internet router is starting to become weaker.

Is the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for C4L broadband performance issues in your home and is more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, contact C4L who will be able to conduct the appropriate connection tests to check if there is a problem on the C4L internet line.

Is the issue due to C4L broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the C4L internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods e.g weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should contact C4L to check your minimum speed.
