Is your Wi-Fi network connection the problem?
The cause of the problem could be your Wi-Fi network connection and not the Chilly Hippo broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the wireless network being the cause of the issue by connecting your computer directly to the Chilly Hippo broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the Chilly Hippo speed test again.
If performance is better when you’re connected via an ethernet cable then this proves that the problem may be with the wireless network connection setup.
Possible things to investigate are:
- Are the WiFi channels you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
- Could your Wifi signal from the router be obstructed?
- Does your performance improve when you’re stood directly infront of the Chilly Hippo broadband or wireless router?
Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Guest wireless network?
Neighbors could be using your wirelessi network and using up all the Chilly Hippo bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all point to your connection.
There are two applications that you can use to scan your wireless network to see who is connected:
Both applications will scan your Wifi network and display a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a Wi-Fi network Booster for my Chilly Hippo broadband?
If you find that you have wireless black holes in your house, then a Wifi extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.
The wireless network booster simply picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is starting to become weak and then re-transmits the wireless signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s coverage.
Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your Wi-Fi network signal from the Chilly Hippo broadband router is starting to become weak. Approxiametly where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to two bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.
When was the last time you upgraded your Chilly Hippo broadband router?
