Troubleshooting CLANNET internet speed problems
Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your CLANNET broadband connection, we suggest that you run a CLANNET Internet Speed Test to measure your current internet speed.
It is also a good idea find out the minimum download speed you on your broadband package from CLANNET.
You can get this information by checking a CLANNET broadband bill, your CLANNET contract or by contacting CLANNET.
Probable causes of CLANNET’s slow broadband performance
Is it the CLANNET internet connection that is running slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You may need to check how many applications are currently running on your device.
The speed problem could be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources e.g Memory/CPU and as opposed to a problem with CLANNET’s broadband connection.
If you’re on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and RAM utilisation.
On any other device, you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully kill all programs that may have been hogging system resources.
Re-run the CLANNET Speedtest on your personal computer and your phone to check how the speedtest results compare between the 2 devices.
This should hopefully give you more info to help determine whether the issue is with your PC/Smartphone or the CLANNET internet connection.

Is your Wifi network the cause of the issue?
The root cause of the performance issue could be your Wifi network as opposed to the CLANNET broadband connection.
You could rule out the wireless by connecting your PC directly to the CLANNET broadband router using a network cable and then run the CLANNET Speed checker again.
If the speed improves when you’re connected via a network cable, this indicates that the issue may be with the Wifi network.
Possible things to check:
- Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Is the wireless network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does your speed get better when you’re stood directly in-front of the CLANNET broadband router?
Exactly who’s connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How secure is your Wifi network password? It may be time to update it.
Neighbors could be using your Wifi network and using up all the CLANNET speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your CLANNET broadband connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities over your CLANNET broadband connection.
Here are 3 applications that you can potentially utlise to analyse your Wi-Fi network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network troubleshooting tool WiFi Analyzer
The above software will scan your Wi-Fi network and show you a list of the devices connected.
Do I need a wireless network booster for my CLANNET broadband?
You may find that you have Wifi black holes in your property, a Wifi network extender also known as a wireless Booster may be the best fix to strengthen your Wifi signal to cover any coverage gaps.
The Wifi booster simply picks up the existing wireless network signal just as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to extend it’s reach.
Position the Wifi extender near the position where your Wifi network signal from your CLANNET internet router is starting to become weaker.
Place it approximately where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your property with a tablet to find where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the CLANNET broadband router?
The CLANNET and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Always ensure that the CLANNET broadband internet router is running the latest software.
Most CLANNET internet routers allow you to carry out the software update by logging into the CLANNET broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.
If you can’t do this, contact CLANNET and they will do this for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.
As well as updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long period, it’s probably worth talking to CLANNET to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common cause for CLANNET broadband performance problems in your property and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.
If you are not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact CLANNET who should be able to carry out the appropriate connection tests to check if there is a problem on the CLANNET broadband line.
Is it due to CLANNET Internet congestion?
If you are finding that the CLANNET broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain times e.g weekends or evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.
You should contact CLANNET to check your minimum speed.
