How to troubleshoot Elite broadband speed issues

Elite Internet speed test - Slow broadband speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your Elite internet connection, we suggest that you run a Elite Internet Speedtest to confirm your current internet speed.

Also find out the minimum download speed you are paying for from Elite.

You can get this info by checking a Elite broadband bill, your Elite contract or by contacting Elite.

Likely causes of Elite’s slow internet performance

Is it the Elite broadband that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to check the number of apps are currently running on your device.

The performance problem may be due to over-utilisation of your device’s resources e.g Memory/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with Elite’s broadband connection.

If you are on a laptop then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM usage.

On other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will kill all apps that may be hogging your device resources.

Re-run the Elite Speed test on your PC and your mobile phone to check how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully give you more info to work with in terms of whether the issue lies with your PC/Smartphone or the Elite internet connection.

Is the Wifi the cause of the performance issue?

The root cause of the performance issue may be your internal Wifi network as opposed to the Elite broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your computer directly to the Elite broadband router with an ethernet cable and then run the Elite Speed test again.

If the performance improves when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this proves that the issue may be with your Wifi network.

A number of things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is the Wifi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when your are standing right in-front of the Elite broadband router?

Exactly who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been hacked? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How strong is your Wi-Fi network password? It may be time to update it.

Neighbors could be using your Wifi network and eating up all the Elite bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Elite internet connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities over your Elite internet connection.

Elite WiFi no connection

Here are 3 applications to utlise to analyze your wireless network to see who’s connected:

The above apps will scan your wireless network and produce a list of the everything on your wifi.

Should I get a wireless network booster for my Elite broadband?

You may find that there are wireless coverage gaps in your home, a wireless network extender also known as a wireless Booster may be the best solution to boost your wireless signal to cover any black spots.

The Wi-Fi network extender picks up your existing wireless signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to extend it’s coverage.

Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your Wi-Fi network signal from the Elite broadband router is becoming weaker.

Place it near where your Wifi network signal drops down to less than 2 bars. Walk around your house with a mobile phone to determine where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the Elite broadband router?

Elite broadband router upgrade

The Elite and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the Elite internet router is running on the latest software.

Most Elite internet routers will allow you to perform the software update by simply logging into the Elite broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the upgrade.

If you cannot do this, contact Elite and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long time, it may be worth speaking to Elite to request for a router upgrade.

Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for Elite broadband performance issues in your area and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered through copper phone lines.

If you are unsure if this is applicable to you, contact Elite who will be able to carry out the appropriate connection checks to check if there is a issue on the Elite internet connection.

Is the performance issue due to Elite broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the Elite broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends or evenings, it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact Elite to find out your minimum speed.
