How to troubleshoot Elite broadband speed problems

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your Elite internet connection, we suggest that you perform a Elite Internet Speed Test to benchmark your current internet speed.
It is a good idea to also find out the minimum download speed you on your broadband package from Elite.
You can find this info by checking your Elite broadband bill, your Elite contract or by contacting Elite.
Potential causes of Elite’s slow broadband speed
Is it the Elite internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You may need to check the number of apps are currently running on your device.
The speed issue may be due to over-utilization of your device’s resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU and not a problem with Elite’s broadband connection.
If you’re on a laptop then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory utilisation.
On other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully should shutdown all applications that may be hogging your device resources.
Run the Elite Speedtest on your personal computer and your mobile phone to see how the results differ between the 2 devices.
Hopefully this should provide you with more information to help determine if the issue lies with your device or the Elite internet connection.

Is your wireless the cause of the slowness?
The cause of the performance problem may be your internal Wifi network and not the Elite broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the Wifi network by simply connecting your PC directly into the Elite broadband router with an ethernet cable and then run the Elite Speed test again.
If the performance is better when you’re connected using a network cable, this suggests that the issue could be with the internal wireless network.
Possible things to check:
- Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
- Is the wireless signal from the wireless router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when your are standing right in-front of the Elite internet router?
Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.
Others could be using your wireless network and eating up all your Elite speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Elite internet connection! Worse still, they may be carrying out illegal activities using your Elite internet connection.

There are three applications that you can potentially use to scan your Wifi network to check who’s connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- MAC users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- Wireless troubleshooting tool WiFi Analyzer
The above software analyse your Wi-Fi network and show you a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a Wifi network booster for my Elite broadband?
You may discover that there are Wi-Fi coverage gaps in your property, a wireless network extender aka a Wifi Booster may be the best fix to boost your wireless signal to cover any coverage gaps.
The Wifi booster simply picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to increase it’s reach.
Position the wireless extender where your Wifi signal from your Elite internet router is starting to become weaker.
Place it near where your Wifi signal is dropping down to two bars. Walk around your property with a smartphone to determine where this is.
When did you last upgrade the Elite broadband router?

The Elite and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Ensure that your Elite broadband router is running on the latest software.
Most Elite broadband routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging into the Elite broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.
If you cannot do this, get in touch with Elite and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.
In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it may be worth speaking to Elite to request for a router upgrade.
Is the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for Elite broadband performance problems in your home and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.
If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, contact Elite who should be able to conduct the appropriate connection checks to see if there is a issue on the Elite broadband line.
Is the performance issue due to Elite Internet congestion?
If you are finding that the Elite broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends or evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.
You should speak to Elite to find out your minimum speed.
