Troubleshooting eXwavia broadband internet speed

eXwavia Internet speedtest - Slow broadband speedBefore you start troubleshooting the performance of your eXwavia broadband connection, you need to run the eXwavia Internet Broadband Speed Test and also confirm the exact Upload and Download speed you are paying for.

You can get this info by checking a eXwavia bill or contact eXwavia to confirm this information.

Likely causes of eXwavia slow broadband speed

Is it the eXwavia broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to consider how many apps are concurrently running on your device that could be utilising your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your eXwavia internet bandwidth.

If you are on a PC then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM utilisation.

On any other device you should try restarting the device which should hopefully shut down all applications that may be running in the background.

Re-run the eXwavia speed test on your computer and your phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully give you some info to work with in terms of whether the problem lies with your device or the eXwavia broadband connection.

Is your wireless network connection the problem?

The cause of the issue could be your wireless network connection and not the eXwavia broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wi-Fi network network being the cause of the problem by connecting your PC directly into the eXwavia broadband router using a network cable and run the eXwavia speed test again.

If the speed improves when you are connected via a network cable then this proves that the issue could be with your Wifi connection setup.

Possible things to check are:

  • Are the Wireless channels you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Could the wireless network signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when your are stood directly infront of the eXwavia broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Guest Wifi network?

Neighbors could be using your Wi-Fii network and eating up all the eXwavia bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all lead to your connection.

There are two applications that you can use to scan your Wi-Fi network to check who’s connected:

Both apps will scan your Wi-Fi network and show you a list of the connected devices.

Check out this tutorial on how to use both applications

Do I need a Wifi network Booster for my eXwavia broadband?

If you find that you have wireless black holes in your home, then a Wifi extender also know as a Wifi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The wireless network booster simply picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal just as it is becoming weak and then re-transmits the Wifi network signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s reach.

Place the Wifi network booster/extender where your Wifi signal from the eXwavia broadband router is starting to become weak.  Approxiametly where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to 2 bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your eXwavia broadband router?

The eXwavia and openreach infrastructure is constantly being upgraded to support new features (some customer facing and others internal).  Ensure that the eXwavia broadband router has the most up to date software.

The majority of eXwavia broadband routers allow you to carry out the software update by logging into the eXwavia broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.

If you cannot do this, contact eXwavia and they are able to either do this for you or talk you through how to do it depending on the eXwavia router model you have.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it’s worth speaking to eXwavia to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the fault external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for eXwavia broadband performance issue in your area and it’s more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact eXwavia who will be able to conduct the appropriate connection checks to see if there is a fault on the eXwavia internet line.

Is it due to eXwavia Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the eXwavia internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. over weekends and evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should contact your eXwavia to find out if the service you have subscribed to has a guaranteed speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.

Re-testing your eXwavia internet connection

After the fault has been fixed either by yourself or eXwavia, re-test the internet connection using  at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla broadband speedtester to ensure the fault is resolved.
