How to troubleshoot eXwavia broadband speed problems

eXwavia Internet speedtest - Slow Internet speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your eXwavia internet connection, we recommend that you perform a eXwavia Internet Speed Test to benchmark your current broadband speed.

You may also want to find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you have subscribed to from eXwavia.

You can get this info by checking a eXwavia broadband bill, your eXwavia contract or by contacting eXwavia.

Common causes of eXwavia’s slow broadband speed

Is it the eXwavia internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to check the number of apps are running on your device.

The speed issue may be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources i.e RAM/CPU Processor and not an issue with eXwavia’s internet connection.

If you are on a laptop then you can use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory usage.

On any other device, you should try rebooting the device which hopefully will shutdown all programs that may be using up system resources.

Re-run the eXwavia Speed checker on your PC and your mobile to see how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully provide you with some information to work with in terms of whether the problem is with your device or the eXwavia broadband connection.

Is the Wifi the issue?

The cause of the performance issue could be your Wi-Fi network as opposed to the eXwavia internet connection.

You can rule out the Wifi by simply connecting your PC directly to the eXwavia broadband router using a network cable and run the eXwavia Speedtest again.

If the result is better when you are connected using a network cable, this proves that the problem could be with the Wi-Fi network.

A few other things to check:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is your wireless signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when your are stood right in-front of the eXwavia internet router?

Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wifi network? How complex is your Wi-Fi network password? It could be time to update it.

Others could be using your Wifi network and using up all your eXwavia bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your eXwavia broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be conducting illegal activities on your eXwavia broadband connection.

Here are three apps that you can potentially use to analyze your wireless network to check who’s connected:

The above software will scan your Wifi network and produce a list of the devices connected.

Do I need a Wifi network booster for my eXwavia broadband?

You may find that you have Wifi black holes at your house, a wireless extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best solution to boost your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage gaps.

The wireless extender picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to increase it’s coverage.

Position the wireless network extender near the position where your wireless network signal from your eXwavia internet router is starting to become weaker.

Position it approximately where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to find where this is.

When did you last upgrade the eXwavia broadband router?

eXwavia broadband router upgrade

The eXwavia and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your eXwavia broadband internet router is running on the latest software.

Most eXwavia internet routers will allow you to perform the software upgrade by logging on the eXwavia broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the update.

If you cannot do this, contact eXwavia and they will do this for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had router for a long time, it’s worth talking to eXwavia to request for a router upgrade.

Is the fault external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for eXwavia broadband performance problems in your area and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact eXwavia who should be able to run the relevant line tests to check if there is a problem on the eXwavia internet line.

Is it due to eXwavia Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the eXwavia broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods e.g weekends and evenings, it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should contact eXwavia to check your guaranteed speed.
