Troubleshooting FidoNet broadband performance problems
Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your FidoNet internet connection, we recommend that you perform a FidoNet Broadband Speedtest to confirm your current internet speed.
Also find out the minimum download speed that you on your broadband package from FidoNet.
You can get this info by checking a FidoNet broadband bill, your FidoNet contract or by contacting FidoNet.
Likely causes of FidoNet’s slow internet speed
Is it the FidoNet broadband that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You need to check the number of applications are running on your device.
The performance problem may be due to the over-utilization of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU and not an issue with FidoNet’s broadband connection.
If you are on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory utilisation.
On other device, you should try rebooting the device which hopefully will terminate all apps that may have been hogging your systems resources.
Re-run the FidoNet Speedtest on your computer and your mobile to see how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.
Hopefully this should give you more info to work with in terms of whether the issue lies with your device or the FidoNet broadband connection.

Is your Wifi the problem?
The root cause of the performance issue could be your internal Wifi network as opposed to the FidoNet broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the wireless network by connecting your computer directly into the FidoNet broadband router with a network cable and then run the FidoNet Speedtest again.
If the speed checker result is better when you are connected by a network cable, this suggests that the problem may be with the wireless network.
Possible things to look further into:
- Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
- Is your Wifi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
- Does your performance get better when you’re standing directly infront of the FidoNet wireless router?
Who’s connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been hacked? Do you have an un-secured Wifi network? How strong is your Wi-Fi network password? It may be time to update it.
Neighbors could be on your Wi-Fi network and eating up all your FidoNet bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your FidoNet internet connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities on your FidoNet internet connection.
There are three apps that you can potentially utlise to analyze your wireless network to check who is connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- WiFi scanning tool WiFi Analyzer
The above applications analyse your wireless network and show you a list of the everything on your wifi.
Should I get a wireless booster for my FidoNet broadband?
If you find that there are Wi-Fi black holes in your home, a Wifi network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to increase your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black spots.
The Wifi network extender picks up the existing wireless signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to extend it’s coverage.
Place the Wifi network booster near the position where your Wi-Fi network signal from your FidoNet internet router is starting to become weaker.
Place it near where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your property with a mobile phone to find where this is.
When was the last time you upgraded the FidoNet broadband router?
The FidoNet and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Ensure that the FidoNet broadband router is running the latest software.
Most FidoNet broadband routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging into the FidoNet broadband router and simply clicking on a button to start the update.
If you can’t do this, contact FidoNet and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.
In addition to updating the software, if you have had hardware for a long period, it’s probably worth talking to FidoNet to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the fault outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely cause for FidoNet broadband performance problems in your property and it’s more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact FidoNet who should be able to carry out the relevant line checks to see if there is a fault on the FidoNet internet line.
Is the issue due to FidoNet broadband congestion?
If you are finding that the FidoNet broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. over weekends or during the evening, it may be due to congestion during peak hours.
You should speak to FidoNet to find out your guaranteed speed.
