How to troubleshoot FireFly broadband speed problems
Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your FireFly internet connection, we recommend that you run a FireFly Broadband Speedtest to measure your current connection speed.
You may also want to find out the guaranteed minimum download speed that you are paying for from FireFly.
You can find this info by checking a FireFly broadband bill, your FireFly contract or by contacting FireFly.
Potential causes of FireFly’s slow internet speed
Is it the FireFly internet connection that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You need to check the number of apps are running on your device.
The performance issue may be due to over-utilization of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU Processor and as opposed to a problem with FireFly’s broadband connection.
If you’re on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory usage.
On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will terminate all apps that may have been using up your systems resources.
Run the FireFly Speedtest on your PC and your mobile phone to check how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.
This should hopefully give you more information to help determine whether the problem is with your PC/Smartphone or the FireFly broadband connection.

Is the Wifi the cause of the slowness?
The cause of the performance issue could be your wireless network and not the FireFly broadband internet connection.
You could rule out the wireless by connecting your computer directly to the FireFly broadband router using a network cable and run the FireFly Speed checker again.
If the result improves when you’re connected via a network cable, this suggests that the issue could be with the wireless.
A few other things to investigate:
- Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
- Is the wireless network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when your are stood right infront of the FireFly wireless router?
Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured Wifi network? How strong is your Wi-Fi network password? It could be time to change it.
Neighbours could be on your wireless network and using up all the FireFly bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your FireFly internet connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities on your FireFly internet connection.
Here are three applications that you can potentially utlise to analyze your Wifi network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network troubleshooting tool WiFi Analyzer
The above software scan your wireless network and show you a list of the devices connected.
Should I get a wireless network booster for my FireFly broadband?
You may find that you have Wifi black spots in your home, a wireless network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to strengthen your wireless signal to cover any coverage gaps.
The Wifi network booster simply picks up your existing wireless network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to increase it’s coverage.
Position the wireless extender near where your Wifi signal from your FireFly broadband router is becoming weaker.
Place it near where your Wi-Fi network signal is dropping down to less than 2 signal bars. Walk around your property with a smartphone to find where this location is.
When was the last time you upgraded the FireFly broadband router?
The FireFly and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Ensure that the FireFly internet router is running on the latest software.
The majority of FireFly broadband routers allow you to perform the software upgrade by simply logging on the FireFly broadband router and simply clicking a button to start the upgrade.
If you can’t do this, get in touch with FireFly and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or talk you through the process.
In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it is worth talking to FireFly to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely cause for FireFly broadband performance problems in your area and is more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.
If you are not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact FireFly who will be able to carry out the relevant line tests to see if there is a issue on the FireFly broadband connection.
Is the issue due to FireFly broadband congestion?
If you are finding that the FireFly internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should contact FireFly to check your minimum speed.
