How to troubleshoot GConnect broadband speed issues

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your GConnect internet connection, we recommend that you perform a GConnect Broadband Speedtest to measure your current connection speed.
You may also want to confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from GConnect.
You can find this info by checking your GConnect broadband bill, your GConnect contract or by contacting GConnect.
Common causes of GConnect’s slow internet performance
Is it your GConnect broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to check the number of apps are running on your device.
The performance issue could be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU Processor and not a problem with GConnect’s internet connection.
If you are on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM utilization.
On other device, you should try restarting the device which should hopefully shut down all programs that may have been using up system resources.
Re-run the GConnect Speedtest on your PC and your mobile phone to check how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.
This should hopefully give you more info to work with in terms of if the problem is with your PC/Smartphone or the GConnect broadband connection.

Is your wireless network the cause of the performance issue?
The root cause of the performance issue may be your wireless and not the GConnect broadband connection.
You can rule out the Wifi network by simply connecting your PC directly to the GConnect broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the GConnect Speed test again.
If the result improves when you are connected via a network cable, this indicates that the problem could be with the wireless.
A few other things to look further into:
- Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
- Is the Wifi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does the speed get better when you’re standing right infront of the GConnect internet router?
Who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open wireless network? How secure is your Wi-Fi network password? It may be time to update it.
Others could be on your Wi-Fi network and eating up all your GConnect speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your GConnect internet connection! Worse still, they may be carrying out illegal activities over your GConnect broadband connection.

Here are 3 applications to use to scan your wireless network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network troubleshooting application WiFi Analyzer
The above software scan your wireless network and show you a list of the everything on your wifi.
Should I get a wireless booster for my GConnect broadband?
If you discover that there are Wi-Fi black holes at your property, a Wifi network extender aka a wireless Booster may be the best solution to increase your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage holes.
The Wifi extender simply picks up your existing Wi-Fi network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to extend it’s coverage.
Place the wireless network booster/extender near the position where your Wi-Fi network signal from your GConnect broadband router is becoming weaker.
Position it near where your Wifi signal drops down to less than two bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to find where this is.
When was the last time you upgraded the GConnect broadband router?

The GConnect and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Always ensure that your GConnect broadband router is running on the most up-to-date software.
Most GConnect broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by simply logging into the GConnect broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.
If you cannot do this, get in touch with GConnect and they will do this for you or talk you through the process.
In addition to updating the software, if you have had router for a long time, it may be worth talking to GConnect to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for GConnect broadband performance issues in your area and it’s more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered through copper phone lines.
If you are unsure if this is relevant in your case, contact GConnect who will be able to conduct the appropriate line tests to see if there is a fault on the GConnect broadband connection.
Is the issue because of GConnect broadband congestion?
If you are finding that the GConnect internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g over weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.
You should speak to GConnect to check your minimum speed.
