How to troubleshoot Gigaclear broadband speed problems

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your Gigaclear internet connection, we recommend that you run a Gigaclear Internet Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.
It is a good idea to also confirm the minimum download speed you are paying for from Gigaclear.
You can find this information by checking your Gigaclear broadband bill, your Gigaclear contract or by contacting Gigaclear.
Probable causes of Gigaclear’s slow broadband performance
Is it your Gigaclear broadband that is slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You may need to check how many applications are running on your device.
The performance issue may be due to over-utilisation of your system resources e.g Memory/CPU Processor and not a problem with Gigaclear’s broadband connection.
If you are on a computer then you can use the task manager to check your Processor and RAM utilisation.
On other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will shutdown all programs that may have been hogging your systems resources.
Run the Gigaclear Speed checker on your personal computer and your phone to see how the speedtest results differ between the 2 devices.
This should hopefully give you some info to help determine whether the problem is with your device or the Gigaclear broadband connection.

Is your wireless the problem?
The root cause of the performance problem could be your wireless as opposed to the Gigaclear broadband connection.
You could rule out the Wifi by connecting your computer directly into the Gigaclear broadband router using a network cable and then run the Gigaclear Speedtest again.
If the speed test result is better when you’re connected via a network cable, this shows that the issue may be with your internal wireless network.
A number of things to look further into:
- Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
- Is your Wifi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
- Does your performance improve when you’re standing right in-front of the Gigaclear internet router?
Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How complex is your wireless network password? It may be time to change it.
Neighbors could be on your wireless network and using up all the Gigaclear bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your Gigaclear broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities using your Gigaclear broadband connection.

There are three applications to use to analyze your Wifi network to see who is connected:
- Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- Apple users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network scanning application WiFi Analyzer
The above applications will scan your Wifi network and display a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a Wi-Fi network booster for my Gigaclear broadband?
If you find that you have Wifi black spots in your home, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to boost your wireless signal to cover any coverage gaps.
The wireless booster picks up the existing Wifi signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to extend it’s coverage.
Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender near where your wireless signal from your Gigaclear internet router is starting to become weaker.
Position it approximately where your Wifi signal is dropping down to two signal bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to try and establish where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the Gigaclear broadband router?

The Gigaclear and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Ensure that the Gigaclear broadband router is running the most up to date software.
The majority of Gigaclear broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by simply logging on the Gigaclear broadband router and simply clicking on a button to perform the update.
If you cannot do this, get in touch with Gigaclear and they will be able to do this for you or guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.
In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long time, it’s probably worth speaking to Gigaclear to request for a hardware upgrade.
Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for Gigaclear broadband performance problems in your area and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact Gigaclear who will be able to conduct the relevant connection tests to check if there is a problem on the Gigaclear internet connection.
Is the issue because of Gigaclear Internet congestion?
If you’re finding that the Gigaclear internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends or during the evening, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.
You should contact Gigaclear to find out your minimum speed.
