Troubleshooting GreenNet internet speed problems

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your GreenNet broadband connection, we recommend that you run a GreenNet Internet Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.
It is also a good idea confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from GreenNet.
You can get this information by checking your GreenNet broadband bill, your GreenNet contract or by contacting GreenNet.
Possible causes of GreenNet’s slow internet speed
Is it the GreenNet broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to consider how many apps are running on your device.
The performance issue could be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU Processor and not an issue with GreenNet’s broadband connection.
If you’re on a PC then you can use the task manager to check your Processor and Memory usage.
On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully terminate all applications that may have been hogging system resources.
Run the GreenNet Speed checker on your computer and your phone to check how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.
This should hopefully give you more info to help determine whether the problem lies with your device or the GreenNet internet connection.

Is the Wi-Fi network the cause of the issue?
The root cause of the performance issue may be your Wi-Fi network as opposed to the GreenNet internet connection.
You could rule out the Wifi network by simply connecting your computer directly into the GreenNet broadband router with a network cable and run the GreenNet Speedtest again.
If the result is better when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this proves that the problem could be with the Wifi.
A number of things to investigate:
- Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
- Is the wireless network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does your performance get better when your are standing directly in-front of the GreenNet internet router?
Exactly who’s connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How complex is your wireless network password? It could be time to update it.
Neighbours could be using your Wi-Fi network and eating up all your GreenNet bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your GreenNet broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be conducting illegal activities over your GreenNet internet connection.

There are 3 apps that you can potentially utlise to analyse your Wi-Fi network to see who’s connected:
- Microsoft users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- WiFi scanning tool WiFi Analyzer
The above applications scan your Wi-Fi network and produce a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a wireless booster for my GreenNet broadband?
You may find that you have Wifi black holes at your property, a wireless extender also known as a Wifi Booster may be the best solution to boost your Wifi signal to cover any black spots.
The Wi-Fi network extender simply picks up your existing wireless network signal just as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to extend it’s coverage.
Place the Wifi network extender near the position where your Wi-Fi network signal from your GreenNet broadband router is starting to become weaker.
Place it near where your Wifi signal drops down to two bars. Walk around your property with a smartphone to try and establish where this location is.
When was the last time you upgraded the GreenNet broadband router?

The GreenNet and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Ensure that your GreenNet internet router is running on the most up-to-date software.
Most GreenNet internet routers allow you to perform the software update by simply logging into the GreenNet broadband router and simply clicking on a button to start the upgrade.
If you cannot do this, contact GreenNet and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through the process.
In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it’s worth speaking to GreenNet to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the problem outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common cause for GreenNet broadband performance problems in your home and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered through copper phone lines.
If you are unsure if this is applicable to you, contact GreenNet who should be able to conduct the appropriate line tests to see if there is a fault on the GreenNet broadband line.
Is the issue due to GreenNet Internet congestion?
If you are finding that the GreenNet internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. over weekends and during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should contact GreenNet to find out your guaranteed speed.
