Troubleshooting HiWiFi broadband performance issues

HiWiFi Internet speedtest - Slow broadband speed

Before you start troubleshooting the speed of your HiWiFi internet connection, we suggest that you perform a HiWiFi Internet Speed Test to measure your current internet speed.

It is also a good idea find out the minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from HiWiFi.

You can get this info by checking your HiWiFi broadband bill, your HiWiFi contract or by contacting HiWiFi.

Possible causes of HiWiFi’s slow internet speed

Is it your HiWiFi internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to consider how many applications are currently running on your device.

The speed problem may be due to over-utilisation of your system resources i.e Memory/CPU and as opposed to an issue with HiWiFi’s internet connection.

If you are on a computer then you can use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory utilisation.

On other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will shutdown all programs that may have been using up your device resources.

Run the HiWiFi Speedtest on your computer and your mobile to check how the speed test results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should give you more info to work with in terms of if the problem is with your PC/Smartphone or the HiWiFi broadband connection.

Is your wireless the issue?

The cause of the performance problem may be your wireless network and not the HiWiFi internet connection.

You can rule out the wireless by connecting your computer directly into the HiWiFi broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the HiWiFi Speed test again.

If the performance improves when you’re connected by a network cable, this indicates that the issue could be with your Wi-Fi network.

Possible things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is your wireless signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does the speed improve when you’re standing right infront of the HiWiFi internet router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been hacked? Do you have an open Wifi network? How strong is your wireless network password? It may be time to change it.

Neighbors could be on your Wi-Fi network and eating up all your HiWiFi bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your HiWiFi broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities using your HiWiFi internet connection.

Here are three apps that you can potentially utlise to scan your Wifi network to see who’s connected:

The above apps will scan your wireless network and show you a list of the devices connected.

Should I get a Wifi booster for my HiWiFi broadband?

You may find that there are wireless black holes at your property, a Wifi extender also known as a wireless Booster is the best solution to increase your Wifi signal to cover any coverage holes.

The Wi-Fi network extender simply picks up your existing Wifi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to extend it’s coverage.

Position the wireless extender near where your Wi-Fi network signal from your HiWiFi broadband router is becoming weaker.

Place it approximately where your Wifi network signal drops down to less than 2 bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to determine where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the HiWiFi internet router?

HiWiFi ISP router upgrade

The HiWiFi and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the HiWiFi broadband internet router is running on the most up-to-date software.

The majority of HiWiFi internet routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging into the HiWiFi broadband router and simply clicking a button to start the update.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with HiWiFi and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long period, it’s worth talking to HiWiFi to request for a hardware upgrade.

Is the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for HiWiFi broadband performance problems in your property and is more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is applicable to you, contact HiWiFi who will be able to conduct the relevant line tests to check if there is a issue on the HiWiFi broadband connection.

Is the performance issue due to HiWiFi Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the HiWiFi broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain times i.e. weekends or evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should contact HiWiFi to check your minimum speed.
