Troubleshooting HiWiFi broadband performance problems

HiWiFi Internet speedtest - Slow Internet speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your HiWiFi internet connection, we recommend that you perform a HiWiFi Broadband Speed Test to measure your current internet speed.

Also find out the minimum download speed you are paying for from HiWiFi.

You can get this information by checking a HiWiFi broadband bill, your HiWiFi contract or by contacting HiWiFi.

Likely causes of HiWiFi’s slow internet speed

Is it the HiWiFi broadband that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to consider how many applications are running on your device.

The speed problem could be due to over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU Processor and not a problem with HiWiFi’s broadband connection.

If you are on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM usage.

On other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully should terminate all apps that may have been using up your systems resources.

Run the HiWiFi Speed checker on your PC and your phone to check how the results compare between the two devices.

Hopefully this should give you more information to help determine whether the issue is with your PC/Smartphone or the HiWiFi internet connection.

Is your wireless network the issue?

The cause of the performance problem may be your Wifi network as opposed to the HiWiFi internet connection.

You can rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your computer directly to the HiWiFi broadband router using a network cable and then run the HiWiFi Speed checker again.

If the result is better when you’re connected using an ethernet cable, this proves that the problem could be with your Wifi network.

A number of things to investigate:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is your wireless signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does your speed get better when your are standing directly infront of the HiWiFi internet router?

Who is connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been hacked? Do you have an un-secured Wi-Fi network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbours could be on your Wi-Fi network and eating up all your HiWiFi bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your HiWiFi internet connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities over your HiWiFi broadband connection.

HiWiFi wireless issues

Here are 3 apps that you can use to analyse your Wifi network to check who is connected:

The above software scan your wireless network and display a list of the everything on your wifi.

Should I get a Wifi network booster for my HiWiFi broadband?

You may discover that you have Wi-Fi black holes at your house, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best solution to strengthen your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage gaps.

The Wifi booster picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to extend it’s coverage.

Position the Wi-Fi network booster near the position where your Wifi network signal from your HiWiFi internet router is starting to become weaker.

Position it approximately where your Wifi network signal is dropping down to less than 2 signal bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to try and establish where this location is.

When did you last upgrade the HiWiFi broadband router?

HiWiFi router upgrade

The HiWiFi and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your HiWiFi internet router is running the most up to date software.

The majority of HiWiFi internet routers allow you to perform the software update by simply logging into the HiWiFi broadband router and simply clicking a button to start the update.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with HiWiFi and they will be able to do this for you or alternatively, talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had router for a long period, it’s worth speaking to HiWiFi to request for a router upgrade.

Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for HiWiFi broadband performance issues in your property and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered through copper phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact HiWiFi who will be able to carry out the relevant line checks to check if there is a fault on the HiWiFi internet connection.

Is the performance issue because of HiWiFi Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the HiWiFi internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should contact HiWiFi to find out your guaranteed speed.
