Is it your Hotchilli broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

The cause of the problem could be your wireless network connection and not the Hotchilli broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the wireless network being the cause of the problem by connecting your PC directly to the Hotchilli broadband router using a network cable and run the Hotchilli speed test again.

If the speed improves when you are connected by a network cable then this proves that the issue may be with your Wifi connection setup.

Possible things to investigate are:

  • Are the Wireless channels you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Could the Wifi signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when you’re stood directly in-front of the Hotchilli broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Guest Wi-Fi network?

Do I need a wireless network Booster for my Hotchilli broadband?

If you find that you have Wifi black holes in your house, then a Wifi extender also know as a wireless Booster is the fix to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up the existing wireless network signal just as it is becoming weak and then re-transmits the wireless signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s coverage.

Place the wireless network booster/extender where your wireless signal from the Hotchilli broadband router is becoming weak.  Approxiametly where your Wifi signal drops down to 2 bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your Hotchilli broadband router?

Is the issue external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for Hotchilli broadband performance problem in your home and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Hotchilli who will be able to carry out the relevant line checks to see if there is a issue on the Hotchilli broadband connection.

Is it due to Hotchilli Broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the Hotchilli internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g over weekends and evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should speak to your Hotchilli to understand if the service you have subscribed to has a guaranteed speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.
