How to troubleshoot Hyperoptic internet performance problems

Hyperoptic Internet speed test - Slow Internet speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your Hyperoptic internet connection, we recommend that you perform a Hyperoptic Broadband Speedtest to confirm your current internet speed.

Also find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you are paying for from Hyperoptic.

You can get this information by checking a Hyperoptic broadband bill, your Hyperoptic contract or by contacting Hyperoptic.

Potential causes of Hyperoptic’s slow broadband speed

Is it the Hyperoptic broadband that is running slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to check the number of apps are currently running on your device.

The speed problem could be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU Processor and not an issue with Hyperoptic’s internet connection.

If you’re on a computer then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory utilization.

On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will shutdown all applications that may be hogging your systems resources.

Run the Hyperoptic Speed checker on your computer and your mobile phone to check how the results differ between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully give you some info to work with in terms of if the issue is with your device or the Hyperoptic internet connection.

Is your Wifi network the problem?

The root cause of the performance issue could be your Wifi network as opposed to the Hyperoptic broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the wireless network by connecting your computer directly into the Hyperoptic broadband router with an ethernet cable and then run the Hyperoptic Speed test again.

If the result improves when you’re connected by an ethernet cable, this suggests that the problem could be with your internal wireless network.

Possible things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is your Wifi signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does the speed improve when you’re standing right in-front of the Hyperoptic internet router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open wireless network? How complex is your Wi-Fi network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbours could be on your Wi-Fi network and using up all the Hyperoptic speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your Hyperoptic broadband connection! Worse still, they may be carrying out illegal activities using your Hyperoptic internet connection.

Hyperoptic WiFi no connection

Here are 3 applications to utlise to scan your wireless network to check who is connected:

The above software analyse your Wifi network and show you a list of the connected devices.

Do I need a Wi-Fi network booster for my Hyperoptic broadband?

You may find that there are wireless coverage holes at your home, a wireless extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best solution to boost your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black spots.

The wireless network extender picks up your existing wireless network signal just as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to increase it’s coverage.

Position the wireless extender near the position where your Wifi network signal from your Hyperoptic broadband router is becoming weaker.

Position it approximately where your Wifi signal is dropping down to 2 signal bars. Walk around your house with a mobile phone to find where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded the Hyperoptic internet router?

Hyperoptic ISP router upgrade

The Hyperoptic and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the Hyperoptic broadband internet router is running the most up to date software.

The majority of Hyperoptic internet routers allow you to carry out the software update by simply logging on the Hyperoptic broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you can’t do this, contact Hyperoptic and they will be able to do this for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had router for a long period, it’s probably worth speaking to Hyperoptic to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for Hyperoptic broadband performance issues in your home and is more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you are unsure if this is applicable to you, contact Hyperoptic who should be able to run the relevant line checks to see if there is a problem on the Hyperoptic internet line.

Is the performance issue due to Hyperoptic broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the Hyperoptic internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends or evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should speak to Hyperoptic to find out your guaranteed speed.
