How to troubleshoot ICUK broadband performance issues

ICUK Internet speedtest - Slow broadband speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your ICUK broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a ICUK Internet Speed Test to confirm your current connection speed.

It is also a good idea find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you are paying for from ICUK.

You can find this information by checking your ICUK broadband bill, your ICUK contract or by contacting ICUK.

Possible causes of ICUK’s slow internet performance

Is it the ICUK internet connection that is running slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to check the number of apps are running on your device.

The speed issue may be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources e.g Memory/CPU Processor and not an issue with ICUK’s internet connection.

If you are on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM usage.

On other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully will shut down all programs that may be hogging your device resources.

Run the ICUK Speed checker on your personal computer and your mobile phone to check how the speed test results differ between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully give you more information to help determine whether the issue lies with your device or the ICUK broadband connection.

Is the Wifi network the cause of the performance issue?

The root cause of the performance issue could be your Wifi and not the ICUK broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the wireless network by simply connecting your PC directly into the ICUK broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the ICUK Speed test again.

If the speed checker result improves when you’re connected via a network cable, this proves that the problem may be with your Wi-Fi network.

A few other things to check:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is your Wi-Fi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does your speed improve when your are stood right infront of the ICUK internet router?

Who’s connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How complex is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbours could be using your Wi-Fi network and using up all the ICUK speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your ICUK internet connection! Worse than that, they may be conducting illegal activities over your ICUK broadband connection.

ICUK WiFi Lagging

There are three apps that you can potentially use to analyse your Wifi network to see who’s connected:

The above apps will scan your wireless network and show you a list of the everything on your wifi.

Should I get a Wi-Fi network booster for my ICUK broadband?

If you find that you have Wi-Fi coverage holes in your home, a wireless network extender also known as a Wifi Booster may be the best fix to boost your wireless signal to cover any coverage holes.

The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up your existing wireless signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to increase it’s reach.

Position the wireless booster near where your wireless network signal from your ICUK internet router is starting to become weaker.

Place it approximately where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your property with a smartphone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded the ICUK broadband router?

ICUK broadband router upgrade

The ICUK and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Ensure that the ICUK internet router is running the most up-to-date software.

Most ICUK internet routers allow you to perform the software upgrade by logging into the ICUK broadband router and simply clicking on a button to perform the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, contact ICUK and they will do this for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had router for a long period, it is worth speaking to ICUK to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for ICUK broadband performance problems in your area and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.

If you are unsure if this is applicable to you, contact ICUK who will be able to carry out the appropriate connection checks to check if there is a problem on the ICUK internet connection.

Is it due to ICUK Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the ICUK broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods e.g over weekends or during the evening, it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should contact ICUK to find out your minimum speed.
