How to troubleshoot Imagine broadband internet performance

You can get this info by checking a Imagine bill or contact Imagine to confirm this information.

Possible causes of Imagine slow internet speed

Is it your Imagine broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check how many applications are currently running on your device that could be using your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your Imagine internet bandwidth.

If you’re on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your processor and memory utilisation.

On any other device you could try restarting the device which should hopefully terminate all apps that may have been running in the background.

Re-run the Imagine speed checker on your computer and your phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully give you some information to work with in terms of if the issue lies with your device or the Imagine broadband connection.

Is your Wi-Fi network connection the problem?

The cause of the issue could be your wireless connection and not the Imagine broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wifi network being the cause of the problem by connecting your computer directly into the Imagine broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the Imagine speed checker again.

If speed improves when you are connected using an ethernet cable then this proves that the issue could be with the Wi-Fi network connection setup.

Possible things to investigate are:

  • Are the WiFi channels you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Could the wireless signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when you’re standing directly in-front of the Imagine broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Guest wireless network?

Neighbors could be using your wirelessi network and using up all your Imagine bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all lead to your connection.

Do I need a Wi-Fi network Booster for my Imagine broadband?

If you find that you have Wi-Fi black holes in your house, then a Wifi extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The wireless network booster simply picks up the existing wireless signal just as it is becoming weak and then re-transmits the wireless signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s reach.

Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your Wifi network signal from the Imagine broadband router is starting to become weak.  Approxiametly where your wireless network signal drops down to two bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your Imagine broadband router?

The Imagine and openreach infrastructure is constantly being upgraded to support new features (some customer facing and others internal).  Ensure that your Imagine broadband router has the latest software.

Most Imagine broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software update by logging into the Imagine broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you cannot do this, contact Imagine and they will be able to either do this for you or talk you through how to do it depending on the Imagine router model you have.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it’s worth speaking to Imagine to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the problem external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for Imagine broadband performance problem in your area and is more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Imagine who will be able to run the relevant connection checks to see if there is a issue on the Imagine broadband connection.

Is it due to Imagine Broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the Imagine internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. over weekends and during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact your Imagine to understand if the service you have subscribed to has a guaranteed speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.

Re-testing your Imagine broadband connection

After the problem has been fixed either by yourself or Imagine, retest your broadband connection using  at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla internet speedtester to ensure the issue is fixed.
