Troubleshooting Inmarsat internet performance problems
Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your Inmarsat internet connection, we recommend that you run a Inmarsat Broadband Speedtest to measure your current broadband speed.
It is also a good idea find out the minimum download speed you on your broadband package from Inmarsat.
You can get this info by checking your Inmarsat broadband bill, your Inmarsat contract or by contacting Inmarsat.
Probable causes of Inmarsat’s slow internet speed
Is it your Inmarsat internet connection that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to check how many apps are currently running on your device.
The performance issue may be due to over-utilization of your system resources e.g RAM/CPU and as opposed to an issue with Inmarsat’s internet connection.
If you’re on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and Memory usage.
On other device, you could try restarting the device which should hopefully shut down all applications that may have been using up system resources.
Re-run the Inmarsat Speed checker on your computer and your mobile to check how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.
This should hopefully provide you with more information to work with in terms of whether the issue lies with your PC/Smartphone or the Inmarsat internet connection.

Is your wireless network the cause of the slowness?
The cause of the performance problem could be your Wi-Fi network as opposed to the Inmarsat broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the Wifi by simply connecting your computer directly into the Inmarsat broadband router with a network cable and run the Inmarsat Speed test again.
If the performance is better when you’re connected by a network cable, this suggests that the problem could be with your Wifi network.
A number of things to look further into:
- Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
- Is your wireless network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
- Does your performance improve when you’re stood directly in-front of the Inmarsat wireless router?
Who’s connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It may be time to change it.
Others could be using your Wifi network and using up all your Inmarsat speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your Inmarsat broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities using your Inmarsat internet connection.
There are three applications that you can use to analyze your wireless network to check who’s connected:
- Windows users can use Wireless network watcher
- MAC users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- WiFi troubleshooting application WiFi Analyzer
The above software scan your Wi-Fi network and show you a list of the everything on your wifi.
Should I get a Wifi booster for my Inmarsat broadband?
You may find that you have Wi-Fi black spots in your home, a Wifi extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to strengthen your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black spots.
The wireless network booster simply picks up the existing Wifi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to extend it’s coverage.
Position the Wifi network extender near where your wireless network signal from the Inmarsat internet router is becoming weaker.
Position it approximately where your wireless network signal drops down to less than two signal bars. Walk around your house with a smartphone to try and establish where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the Inmarsat broadband router?
The Inmarsat and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves. Ensure that your Inmarsat broadband internet router is running the latest software.
Most Inmarsat internet routers will allow you to carry out the software update by logging on the Inmarsat broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the update.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had router for a long period, it is worth talking to Inmarsat to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the problem outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for Inmarsat broadband performance issues in your home and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Inmarsat who will be able to carry out the appropriate line checks to check if there is a problem on the Inmarsat broadband connection.
Is the performance issue due to Inmarsat Internet congestion?

You should speak to Inmarsat to check your minimum speed.
