How to troubleshoot JHCS broadband speed problems

JHCS Internet speedtest - Slow broadband speed

Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your JHCS broadband connection, we recommend that you run a JHCS Internet Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.

Also find out the guaranteed minimum download speed you on your broadband package from JHCS.

You can get this info by checking your JHCS broadband bill, your JHCS contract or by contacting JHCS.

Likely causes of JHCS’s slow internet performance

Is it the JHCS broadband that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to check how many applications are currently running on your device.

The speed problem could be due to the over-utilization of your system resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU and not an issue with JHCS’s internet connection.

If you’re on a PC then you may use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory utilisation.

On any other device, you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully shutdown all applications that may be hogging your device resources.

Re-run the JHCS Speed test on your PC and your phone to see how the results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with some information to help determine whether the problem is with your device or the JHCS broadband connection.

Is your Wifi network the cause of the slowness?

The root cause of the performance issue may be your wireless network as opposed to the JHCS broadband connection.

You can rule out the wireless by simply connecting your PC directly into the JHCS broadband router with an ethernet cable and run the JHCS Speedtest again.

If the result is better when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this indicates that the problem may be with the wireless network.

A few other things to look further into:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is your Wi-Fi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when you’re standing directly in-front of the JHCS wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open wireless network? How secure is your wireless network password? It could be time to update it.

Neighbors could be on your wireless network and eating up all your JHCS bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your JHCS internet connection! Worse than that, they may be conducting illegal activities on your JHCS broadband connection.

JHCS wireless no connection

There are three apps that you can potentially utlise to scan your Wi-Fi network to see who’s connected:

The above applications scan your wireless network and display a list of the everything on your wifi.

Should I get a Wifi network booster for my JHCS broadband?

If you discover that you have wireless coverage holes in your house, a wireless network extender aka a Wifi Booster may be the best fix to increase your wireless signal to cover any coverage holes.

The wireless network extender picks up your existing wireless signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to increase it’s reach.

Place the Wifi network booster near the position where your Wifi network signal from your JHCS broadband router is becoming weaker.

Position it near where your wireless signal is dropping down to two bars. Walk around your property with a mobile phone to determine where this location is.

When was the last time you upgraded the JHCS broadband router?

JHCS broadband router upgrade

The JHCS and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Ensure that your JHCS broadband router is running the most up to date software.

Most JHCS internet routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging on the JHCS broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the update.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with JHCS and they will be able to do this for you or talk you through the process.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had hardware for a long period, it may be worth speaking to JHCS to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the root cause of the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for JHCS broadband performance issues in your home and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact JHCS who will be able to carry out the appropriate connection checks to check if there is a fault on the JHCS broadband line.

Is the issue due to JHCS Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the JHCS broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends or evenings, it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should speak to JHCS to find out your guaranteed speed.

Re-testing your JHCS broadband connection

After the issue has been resolved either by yourself or JHCS, re-test the broadband connection using  at least 2 separate Speedtests to ensure the fault is fixed:
