How to troubleshoot LINPOP broadband performance problems
Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your LINPOP broadband connection, we recommend that you run a LINPOP Broadband Speedtest to benchmark your current broadband speed.
It is also a good idea find out the minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from LINPOP.
You can get this information by checking your LINPOP broadband bill, your LINPOP contract or by contacting LINPOP.
Common causes of LINPOP’s slow internet performance
Is it your LINPOP internet connection that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You may need to consider how many apps are currently running on your device.
The performance issue could be due to the over-utilization of your device’s resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU Processor and not a problem with LINPOP’s internet connection.
If you’re on a laptop then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM utilization.
On any other device, you should try restarting the device which hopefully should shutdown all apps that may be using up your device resources.
Re-run the LINPOP Speedtest on your personal computer and your phone to check how the results differ between the 2 devices.
Hopefully this should provide you with some info to work with in terms of if the problem lies with your device or the LINPOP broadband connection.

Is your wireless the cause of the issue?
The cause of the performance issue may be your internal Wifi network and not the LINPOP internet connection.
You could rule out the Wifi network by connecting your PC directly into the LINPOP broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the LINPOP Speed checker again.
If the performance is better when you’re connected via an ethernet cable, this shows that the problem may be with your internal wireless network.
A few other things to look further into:
- Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Is your Wifi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does your speed improve when your are standing directly in-front of the LINPOP broadband router?
Exactly who’s connected to my Wifi network?
Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wifi network? How strong is your wireless network password? It could be time to change it.
Neighbours could be using your Wi-Fi network and eating up all the LINPOP speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video over your LINPOP broadband connection! Worse still, they may be carrying out illegal activities over your LINPOP internet connection.
Here are three apps that you can utlise to scan your Wifi network to check who is connected:
- Microsoft users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- Wireless scanning tool WiFi Analyzer
The above applications analyse your wireless network and display a list of the devices connected.
Should I get a Wifi booster for my LINPOP broadband?
If you discover that you have Wifi black holes in your house, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a wireless Booster is the best solution to strengthen your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black spots.
The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up your existing wireless signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to extend it’s reach.
Place the wireless booster near where your Wifi network signal from your LINPOP broadband router is starting to become weaker.
Position it near where your wireless network signal is dropping down to less than two bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to try and establish where this is.
When did you last upgrade the LINPOP broadband router?
The LINPOP and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Ensure that the LINPOP internet router is running the latest software.
The majority of LINPOP broadband routers allow you to perform the software upgrade by simply logging into the LINPOP broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.
If you cannot do this, contact LINPOP and they will perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through the process.
In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it is worth talking to LINPOP to request for a router upgrade.
Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common reason for LINPOP broadband performance problems in your home and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered via copper phone lines.
If you are not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact LINPOP who will be able to carry out the appropriate line tests to see if there is a issue on the LINPOP internet line.
Is the performance issue because of LINPOP Internet congestion?
If you are finding that the LINPOP broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends or evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.
You should contact LINPOP to find out your minimum speed.
