Common causes of LINPOP slow broadband performance

Is it the LINPOP broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to consider how many applications are currently running on your device that could be utilizing your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your LINPOP internet bandwidth.

If you are on a computer then you may use the task manager to check your processor and memory utilization.

On any other device you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully kill all applications that may have been running in the background.

Re-run the LINPOP speed checker on your personal computer and your mobile to see how the speedtest results compare between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully provide you with some information to work with in terms of whether the issue lies with your device or the LINPOP broadband connection.

Is your Wifi network connection the problem?

The cause of the issue could be your wireless network connection and not the LINPOP broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wifi network being the cause of the issue by connecting your computer directly into the LINPOP broadband router using a network cable and run the LINPOP speed checker again.

If the speed is better when you are connected via an ethernet cable then this proves that the issue may be with your Wifi connection setup.

Possible things to check are:

  • Are the WiFi channels you’re using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Could your wireless signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when your are stood directly in-front of the LINPOP broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Guest Wifi network?

Neighbors could be using your Wi-Fii network and eating up all the LINPOP bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all point to your connection.

Do I need a Wi-Fi network Booster for my LINPOP broadband?

If you find that you have wireless black holes in your house, then a Wifi extender aka a wireless Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The Wifi booster simply picks up the existing Wifi network signal as it is starting to become weak and then re-transmits the wireless signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s reach.

Place the wireless network booster/extender where your wireless signal from the LINPOP broadband router is becoming weak.  Approxiametly where your Wifi signal drops down to 2 bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your LINPOP broadband router?

The LINPOP and openreach infrastructure is constantly being upgraded to support new features (some customer facing and others internal).  Ensure that your LINPOP broadband router has the latest software.

The majority of LINPOP broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by logging on the LINPOP broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you can’t do this, contact LINPOP and they will be able to either do this for you or talk you through how to do it depending on the LINPOP router model you have.

As well as updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it is worth talking to LINPOP to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the fault external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for LINPOP broadband performance problem in your home and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact LINPOP who should be able to conduct the relevant line checks to see if there is a problem on the LINPOP internet connection.

Is it due to LINPOP Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the LINPOP internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times e.g over weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should contact your LINPOP to find out if the service you subscribed to has a guaranteed speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.

Re-testing your LINPOP internet connection

After the problem has been fixed either by yourself or LINPOP, re-test your internet connection using  at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla broadband speedtester to ensure the fault is fixed.
