How to troubleshoot Medwave broadband performance issues

Medwave Internet Speedchecker - Slow broadband speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your Medwave broadband connection, we suggest that you run a Medwave Broadband Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.

You may also want to confirm the minimum download speed that you on your broadband package from Medwave.

You can get this information by checking your Medwave broadband bill, your Medwave contract or by contacting Medwave.

Possible causes of Medwave’s slow broadband speed

Is it the Medwave broadband that is slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check the number of apps are currently running on your device.

The performance issue could be due to over-utilisation of your device’s resources e.g Memory/CPU Processor and not an issue with Medwave’s broadband connection.

If you are on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and Memory utilization.

On any other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully will terminate all apps that may be hogging system resources.

Re-run the Medwave Speedtest on your computer and your phone to check how the speed test results differ between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully provide you with some information to help determine whether the issue lies with your PC/Smartphone or the Medwave internet connection.

Is your Wi-Fi network the cause of the issue?

The cause of the performance issue may be your Wi-Fi network as opposed to the Medwave broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the Wifi network by connecting your computer directly to the Medwave broadband router with an ethernet cable and run the Medwave Speed checker again.

If the speed improves when you are connected by a network cable, this proves that the issue may be with the Wi-Fi network.

A few other things to look further into:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Is your wireless network signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when you’re stood directly in-front of the Medwave broadband router?

Exactly who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been shared? Do you have an open Wifi network? How secure is your Wi-Fi network password? It may be time to change it.

Neighbours could be on your wireless network and using up all your Medwave speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Medwave broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be conducting illegal activities using your Medwave broadband connection.

Medwave wireless Slow

There are three apps that you can potentially utlise to scan your wireless network to check who’s connected:

The above apps will scan your Wi-Fi network and show you a list of the connected devices.

Do I need a wireless booster for my Medwave broadband?

You may find that there are Wifi coverage holes in your home, a Wifi network extender aka a wireless Booster is the best fix to increase your wireless signal to cover any black spots.

The Wi-Fi network extender simply picks up the existing wireless network signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to extend it’s coverage.

Position the wireless extender where your Wifi network signal from your Medwave internet router is starting to become weaker.

Place it near where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to two signal bars. Walk around your house with a mobile phone to find where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded the Medwave broadband router?

Medwave ISP router upgrade

The Medwave and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Ensure that the Medwave broadband internet router is running the most up to date software.

Most Medwave internet routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging on the Medwave broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you can’t do this, contact Medwave and they will perform the upgrade for you or guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had router for a long time, it may be worth talking to Medwave to ask for a router upgrade.

Is the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common cause for Medwave broadband performance problems in your property and is more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact Medwave who will be able to run the relevant connection checks to check if there is a problem on the Medwave broadband line.

Is it due to Medwave Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the Medwave broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends or evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact Medwave to check your minimum speed.
