How to troubleshoot Merula internet performance problems

Merula Internet speedtest - Slow broadband speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your Merula broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a Merula Internet Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.

It is also a good idea find out the minimum download speed that you have subscribed to from Merula.

You can find this info by checking a Merula broadband bill, your Merula contract or by contacting Merula.

Probable causes of Merula’s slow broadband speed

Is it your Merula internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check how many apps are currently running on your device.

The performance problem could be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU and not an issue with Merula’s internet connection.

If you’re on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your Processor and Memory utilisation.

On any other device, you could try restarting the device which should hopefully shut down all programs that may be using up your systems resources.

Run the Merula Speedtest on your computer and your mobile phone to see how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with some info to work with in terms of if the issue lies with your PC/Smartphone or the Merula internet connection.

Is your Wifi network the cause of the issue?

The cause of the performance problem could be your internal Wifi network as opposed to the Merula broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the wireless network by connecting your computer directly to the Merula broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the Merula Speedtest again.

If the result improves when you are connected using a network cable, this suggests that the problem may be with your wireless network.

A few other things to look further into:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does your speed get better when your are stood directly infront of the Merula internet router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Wi-Fi network? How complex is your Wifi network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbors could be using your Wi-Fi network and using up all your Merula speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Merula broadband connection! Worse than that, they could be carrying out illegal activities over your Merula internet connection.

Merula wireless Slow

There are 3 apps that you can potentially utlise to analyze your Wifi network to see who’s connected:

The above applications analyse your Wifi network and show you a list of the everything on your wifi.

Should I get a wireless booster for my Merula broadband?

You may find that you have wireless black spots at your home, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best solution to boost your Wi-Fi signal to cover any coverage gaps.

The Wi-Fi network extender picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to increase it’s reach.

Position the wireless network extender near where your Wifi network signal from your Merula broadband router is starting to become weaker.

Place it approximately where your Wifi network signal is dropping down to less than 2 bars. Walk around your property with a smartphone to try and establish where this location is.

When was the last time you upgraded the Merula broadband router?

Merula router upgrade

The Merula and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the Merula broadband router is running on the most up-to-date software.

Most Merula internet routers allow you to perform the software upgrade by simply logging into the Merula broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the update.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with Merula and they will be able to do this for you or guide you through the process.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it’s worth talking to Merula to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for Merula broadband performance issues in your property and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, contact Merula who will be able to carry out the relevant connection checks to see if there is a fault on the Merula internet connection.

Is the issue because of Merula broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the Merula broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends and during the evening, then it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should contact Merula to find out your guaranteed speed.
