How to troubleshoot Morespeed broadband internet performance

You can get this information by checking your Morespeed bill or contact Morespeed to confirm this info.

Common causes of Morespeed slow broadband speed

Is it the Morespeed broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to check how many apps are currently running on your device that could be utilising your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your Morespeed internet bandwidth.

If you are on a laptop then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and memory utilisation.

On any other device you should try restarting the device which should hopefully shutdown all applications that may have been running in the background.

Re-run the Morespeed speedtest on your personal computer and your mobile phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully give you some information to work with in terms of whether the problem lies with your device or the Morespeed internet connection.

Is your Wi-Fi network connection the problem?

The cause of the issue could be your Wifi connection and not the Morespeed broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the Wifi network network being the cause of the problem by connecting your computer directly to the Morespeed broadband router using a network cable and run the Morespeed speed checker again.

If speed is better when you’re connected via an ethernet cable then this proves that the issue may be with the Wifi connection setup.

Possible things to investigate are:

  • Are the Wireless channels you are using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Could your Wifi signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when your are stood directly in-front of the Morespeed broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Guest wireless network?

Neighbors could be using your Wifii network and eating up all your Morespeed bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all lead to your connection.

Do I need a wireless Booster for my Morespeed broadband?

If you find that you have Wifi black holes in your home, then a Wifi extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The Wifi booster simply picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is starting to become weak and then re-transmits the Wifi network signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s reach.

Place the wireless network booster/extender where your wireless signal from the Morespeed broadband router is starting to become weak.  Approxiametly where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to two bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your Morespeed broadband router?

The Morespeed and openreach infrastructure is constantly being updates to support new features (some end user facing and others internal).  Ensure that your Morespeed broadband router has the most up to date software.

The majority of Morespeed broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging on the Morespeed broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the update.

If you can’t do this, contact Morespeed and they are able to either do this for you or talk you through how to do it depending on the Morespeed router model you have.

As well as updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it is worth speaking to Morespeed to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the issue external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for Morespeed broadband performance problem in your area and it’s more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Morespeed who should be able to run the relevant connection tests to check if there is a fault on the Morespeed internet connection.

Is it due to Morespeed Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the Morespeed internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g over weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should speak to your Morespeed to understand if the service you have subscribed to has a guaranteed speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.

Re-testing your Morespeed broadband connection

After the problem has been resolved either by yourself or Morespeed, re-test the internet connection using  at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla internet speedtester to ensure the problem is resolved.
