How to troubleshoot Netserve broadband speed issues
Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your Netserve internet connection, we suggest that you perform a Netserve Broadband Speed Test to measure your current internet speed.
It is a good idea to also confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed you have subscribed to from Netserve.
You can find this information by checking your Netserve broadband bill, your Netserve contract or by contacting Netserve.
Possible causes of Netserve’s slow broadband speed
Is it the Netserve internet connection that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You may need to check how many apps are running on your device.
The speed problem may be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e Memory/CPU Processor and not a problem with Netserve’s internet connection.
If you’re on a laptop then you may use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory utilization.
On any other device, you should try rebooting the device which hopefully will shutdown all apps that may have been using up system resources.
Re-run the Netserve Speed test on your PC and your phone to check how the results compare between the two devices.
This should hopefully give you some info to work with in terms of whether the problem lies with your PC/Smartphone or the Netserve broadband connection.

Is your Wifi network the cause of the issue?
The root cause of the performance problem could be your Wifi as opposed to the Netserve broadband internet connection.
You can rule out the wireless by simply connecting your PC directly to the Netserve broadband router with an ethernet cable and then run the Netserve Speed checker again.
If the speed test result improves when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this suggests that the issue could be with the wireless network.
Possible things to look further into:
- Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Is your Wifi network signal from the internet router obstructed?
- Does the performance improve when your are standing right in-front of the Netserve wireless router?
Exactly who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?
Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Wifi network? How secure is your Wifi network password? It may be time to update it.
Neighbors could be on your Wifi network and eating up all the Netserve speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Netserve broadband connection! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities on your Netserve internet connection.
There are 3 apps that you can use to scan your Wi-Fi network to see who’s connected:
- Microsoft users can use Wireless network watcher
- MAC users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wifi network scanning tool WiFi Analyzer
The above apps analyse your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the connected devices.
Should I get a wireless network booster for my Netserve broadband?
You may find that you have Wifi coverage holes at your property, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a Wifi Booster is the best fix to boost your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black spots.
The wireless extender simply picks up the existing Wi-Fi network signal as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to extend it’s reach.
Position the wireless network booster near where your Wi-Fi network signal from your Netserve internet router is starting to become weaker.
Place it near where your Wifi network signal is dropping down to 2 bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to find where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the Netserve broadband router?
The Netserve and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly updated to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Always ensure that your Netserve broadband router is running the latest software.
Most Netserve broadband routers will allow you to perform the software update by logging into the Netserve broadband router and simply clicking on a button to do the upgrade.
If you cannot do this, get in touch with Netserve and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.
In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it’s probably worth talking to Netserve to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the root cause of the issue external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely cause for Netserve broadband performance issues in your area and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.
If you are unsure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact Netserve who should be able to carry out the appropriate line tests to check if there is a fault on the Netserve internet connection.
Is it due to Netserve broadband congestion?
If you’re finding that the Netserve internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods e.g weekends or evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak times.
You should contact Netserve to find out your guaranteed speed.
