How to troubleshoot Newtel broadband performance issues

Newtel Internet speed test - Slow broadband speed

Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your Newtel broadband connection, we recommend that you run a Newtel Broadband Speed Test to confirm your current internet speed.

It is also a good idea confirm the minimum download speed you on your broadband package from Newtel.

You can find this information by checking a Newtel broadband bill, your Newtel contract or by contacting Newtel.

Possible causes of Newtel’s slow broadband speed

Is it the Newtel broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to check the number of applications are running on your device.

The performance issue could be due to the over-utilization of your system resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU Processor and not a problem with Newtel’s internet connection.

If you are on a laptop then you may use the task manager to see your CPU and Memory utilization.

On any other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully will shutdown all programs that may be hogging your device resources.

Run the Newtel Speed test on your PC and your mobile phone to check how the speedtest results compare between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully give you more info to help determine whether the issue is with your device or the Newtel broadband connection.

Is the Wifi network the issue?

The cause of the performance problem could be your internal Wifi network and not the Newtel internet connection.

You could rule out the wireless by connecting your computer directly into the Newtel broadband router with a network cable and then run the Newtel Speed checker again.

If the speed test result is better when you are connected by a network cable, this suggests that the problem may be with the internal wireless network.

A number of things to look further into:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wi-Fi network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
  • Is your Wi-Fi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does the speed get better when your are stood right in-front of the Newtel wireless router?

Who’s connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open wireless network? How strong is your Wifi network password? It could be time to update it.

Others could be using your Wi-Fi network and using up all your Newtel bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your Newtel broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities over your Newtel broadband connection.

Newtel wireless issues

There are 3 apps that you can potentially use to scan your Wifi network to check who’s connected:

The above apps analyse your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the connected devices.

Should I get a Wifi network booster for my Newtel broadband?

If you discover that there are Wi-Fi coverage gaps at your house, a Wifi extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best solution to increase your Wifi signal to cover any black spots.

The Wi-Fi network booster picks up the existing Wifi network signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to extend it’s coverage.

Position the wireless network booster near where your Wifi network signal from the Newtel broadband router is starting to become weaker.

Place it near where your Wi-Fi network signal is dropping down to less than two bars. Walk around your property with a mobile phone to find where this is.

When did you last upgrade the Newtel broadband router?

Newtel ISP router upgrade

The Newtel and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently updated to support new features and improve reliability as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your Newtel broadband internet router is running on the most up to date software.

Most Newtel broadband routers will allow you to perform the software update by logging on the Newtel broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with Newtel and they will perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it may be worth talking to Newtel to request for a router upgrade.

Is the fault outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for Newtel broadband performance issues in your property and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Newtel who will be able to carry out the relevant line tests to see if there is a fault on the Newtel internet connection.

Is it due to Newtel broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the Newtel broadband connection speed in your area is slows down during certain periods e.g weekends or evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak hours.

You should contact Newtel to find out your minimum speed.
