How to troubleshoot OneBill internet performance problems

OneBill Internet Speedchecker - Slow broadband speed

Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your OneBill broadband connection, we recommend that you perform a OneBill Internet Speedtest to confirm your current internet speed.

It is a good idea to also find out the minimum download speed you have subscribed to from OneBill.

You can get this info by checking a OneBill broadband bill, your OneBill contract or by contacting OneBill.

Probable causes of OneBill’s slow internet performance

Is it your OneBill internet connection that is running slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to consider the number of apps are running on your device.

The performance problem could be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources i.e RAM/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with OneBill’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a laptop then you can use the task manager to see your Processor and RAM utilisation.

On other device, you should try restarting the device which hopefully should terminate all applications that may be using up system resources.

Run the OneBill Speed checker on your computer and your mobile to check how the speedtest results compare between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully provide you with some information to help determine whether the problem is with your device or the OneBill internet connection.

Is your Wifi the cause of the issue?

The root cause of the performance issue could be your wireless network as opposed to the OneBill broadband connection.

You could rule out the Wifi by simply connecting your PC directly to the OneBill broadband router with an ethernet cable and then run the OneBill Speed test again.

If the speed improves when you are connected via an ethernet cable, this suggests that the issue could be with the Wifi network.

A number of things to investigate:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
  • Is your wireless network signal from the internet router obstructed?
  • Does your performance get better when you’re standing right infront of the OneBill wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been hacked? Do you have an open wireless network? How complex is your Wifi network password? It may be time to change it.

Others could be using your Wifi network and eating up all the OneBill bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your OneBill broadband connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities over your OneBill broadband connection.

OneBill WiFi Slow

There are three applications to use to analyse your Wifi network to see who’s connected:

The above applications will scan your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the connected devices.

Do I need a Wi-Fi network booster for my OneBill broadband?

If you find that you have Wi-Fi black spots in your house, a wireless network extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to boost your wireless signal to cover any coverage gaps.

The wireless extender picks up your existing Wifi signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless signal to extend it’s coverage.

Place the Wi-Fi network extender near the position where your Wifi network signal from the OneBill broadband router is becoming weaker.

Position it near where your Wifi network signal drops down to less than 2 bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to find where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded the OneBill broadband router?

OneBill broadband router upgrade

The OneBill and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that the OneBill internet router is running the most up to date software.

Most OneBill broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging on the OneBill broadband router and simply clicking on a button to perform the update.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with OneBill and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or talk you through performing the upgrade yourself.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long time, it’s probably worth talking to OneBill to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the fault outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for OneBill broadband performance problems in your area and it’s more common with internet broadband connections that are delivered through phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is relevant in your case, contact OneBill who should be able to carry out the relevant line tests to check if there is a issue on the OneBill internet line.

Is the performance issue due to OneBill Internet congestion?

If you are finding that the OneBill internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain times e.g over weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact OneBill to check your minimum speed.
