Troubleshooting Primus Saver broadband internet speed
Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your Primus Saver broadband connection, you firstly need to run the Primus Saver Internet Broadband speedtest and also confirm the exact Upload and Download speed you are paying for.
You can get this information by checking a Primus Saver bill or contact Primus Saver to confirm this information.
Possible causes of Primus Saver slow internet speed
Is it your Primus Saver broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?
You need to check how many applications are concurrently running on your device that could be utilising your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your Primus Saver internet bandwidth.
If you are on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM utilization.
On any other device you could try rebooting the device which should hopefully shut down all programs that may be running in the background.
Re-run the Primus Saver speed checker on your computer and your mobile to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.
This should hopefully provide you with some information to work with in terms of whether the problem lies with your device or the Primus Saver internet connection.

Is your Wifi connection the problem?
The cause of the problem could be your wireless network connection and not the Primus Saver broadband internet connection.
You could rule out the wireless network network being the cause of the problem by connecting your computer directly into the Primus Saver broadband router using a network cable and run the Primus Saver speed test again.
If the speed improves when you’re connected via an ethernet cable then this proves that the issue could be with your wireless connection setup.
Possible things to investigate are:
- Are the Wireless channels you’re using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
- Could the Wifi signal from the router be obstructed?
- Does your performance improve when your are standing directly infront of the Primus Saver broadband or wireless router?
Who is connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Guest Wifi network?
Neighbors could be on your wirelessi network and eating up all the Primus Saver bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all point to your connection.
There are two apps that you can use to scan your Wi-Fi network to check who is connected:
Both apps will scan your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the connected devices.
Do I need a wireless Booster for my Primus Saver broadband?
If you find that you have Wifi black holes in your home, then a Wifi extender aka a Wi-Fi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.
The Wi-Fi network booster simply picks up the existing wireless network signal just as it is starting to become weak and then re-transmits the wireless network signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s reach.
Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your Wi-Fi network signal from the Primus Saver broadband router is starting to become weak. Approxiametly where your wireless network signal drops down to two bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.
When was the last time you upgraded your Primus Saver broadband router?
The Primus Saver and openreach infrastructure is constantly being upgraded to support new features (some customer facing and others internal). Always ensure that the Primus Saver broadband router has the most up to date software.
Most Primus Saver broadband routers allow you to carry out the software update by logging into the Primus Saver broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the upgrade.
If you can’t do this, contact Primus Saver and they will be able to either do this for you or guide you through how to do it depending on the Primus Saver router model you have.
As well as updating the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it’s worth speaking to Primus Saver to ask for a hardware upgrade.
Is the problem external (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for Primus Saver broadband performance issue in your area and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.
If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Primus Saver who should be able to conduct the appropriate line tests to check if there is a fault on the Primus Saver broadband connection.
Is it due to Primus Saver Broadband congestion?
If you’re finding that the Primus Saver internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends and evenings, then it may be due to congestion during peak times.
- What is Broadband Contention Ratio and does Primus Saver have contention?
- What does network latency mean?
You should contact your Primus Saver to understand if the service you have subscribed to has a guaranteed speed or is a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.
Re-testing your Primus Saver internet connection
After the issue has been fixed either by yourself or Primus Saver, re-test your broadband connection using at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla internet speedtester to ensure the problem is fixed.
