Troubleshooting SAQ broadband internet performance

Possible causes of SAQ slow internet speed

Is it your SAQ broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to consider how many apps are currently running on your device that could be using your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your SAQ internet bandwidth.

If you’re on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM utilization.

On any other device you should try restarting the device which should hopefully shutdown all programs that may have been running in the background.

Re-run the SAQ speed checker on your computer and your mobile phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the 2 devices.

This should hopefully give you some info to work with in terms of whether the problem lies with your device or the SAQ internet connection.

Is your wireless connection the problem?

The cause of the issue could be your wireless connection and not the SAQ broadband internet connection.

You can rule out the wireless network network being the cause of the issue by connecting your PC directly into the SAQ broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the SAQ speed checker again.

If performance is better when you’re connected by an ethernet cable then this proves that the problem may be with the Wifi connection setup.

Possible things to investigate are:

  • Are the Wireless channels you’re using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Could your Wifi signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does your performance improve when you’re standing directly infront of the SAQ broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Guest Wi-Fi network?

Neighbors could be using your Wifii network and using up all your SAQ bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all point to your connection.

Do I need a Wifi network Booster for my SAQ broadband?

If you find that you have wireless black holes in your house, then a Wifi extender also know as a Wi-Fi Booster is the solution to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The wireless booster simply picks up the existing wireless network signal as it is starting to become weak and then re-transmits the wireless network signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s reach.

Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your wireless signal from the SAQ broadband router is starting to become weak.  Approxiametly where your Wi-Fi network signal drops down to two bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your SAQ broadband router?

The SAQ and openreach infrastructure is constantly being updates to support new features (some customer facing and others internal).  Ensure that your SAQ broadband router has the most up to date software.

The majority of SAQ broadband routers allow you to carry out the software update by logging on the SAQ broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, contact SAQ and they are able to either do this for you or talk you through how to do it depending on the SAQ router model you have.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had the same hardware for a long period, it’s worth talking to SAQ to request for a router upgrade.

Is the problem external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most common reason for SAQ broadband performance problem in your area and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact SAQ who should be able to carry out the relevant connection tests to check if there is a fault on the SAQ broadband line.

Is it due to SAQ Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the SAQ internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should speak to your SAQ to understand if the service you subscribed to has a minimum speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.

Re-testing your SAQ internet connection

After the issue has been resolved either by yourself or SAQ, retest your broadband connection using  at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla internet speedtester to ensure the problem is resolved.
