How to troubleshoot SBBS internet performance problems

SBBS Internet speed test - Slow broadband speed

Before starting to troubleshoot the speed of your SBBS broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a SBBS Internet Speed Test to benchmark your current internet speed.

It is a good idea to also confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed that you are paying for from SBBS.

You can get this info by checking your SBBS broadband bill, your SBBS contract or by contacting SBBS.

Possible causes of SBBS’s slow internet performance

Is it your SBBS internet connection that is running slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You may need to consider how many applications are currently running on your device.

The speed problem may be due to over-utilization of your device’s resources i.e RAM/CPU Processor and not an issue with SBBS’s internet connection.

If you’re on a PC then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory utilization.

On any other device, you could try restarting the device which hopefully should shut down all programs that may have been using up system resources.

Run the SBBS Speedtest on your PC and your mobile to see how the results differ between the two devices.

This should hopefully provide you with more info to work with in terms of whether the problem is with your device or the SBBS broadband connection.

Is your wireless network the cause of the issue?

The cause of the performance problem could be your Wifi network and not the SBBS broadband connection.

You could rule out the Wifi network by simply connecting your PC directly into the SBBS broadband router using an ethernet cable and run the SBBS Speed checker again.

If the performance is better when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this shows that the issue could be with your wireless network.

A number of things to investigate:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you’re using for your Wifi network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is your Wifi network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does the performance get better when you’re standing right in-front of the SBBS wireless router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been hacked? Do you have an un-secured Wifi network? How secure is your wireless network password? It may be time to update it.

Neighbors could be on your Wifi network and eating up all your SBBS bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your SBBS internet connection! Worse than that, they could be conducting illegal activities using your SBBS broadband connection.

SBBS wireless issues

Here are three apps to utlise to analyse your Wifi network to check who’s connected:

The above apps will scan your Wifi network and produce a list of the everything on your wifi.

Do I need a wireless network booster for my SBBS broadband?

If you find that there are wireless black holes at your home, a Wifi network extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster may be the best fix to strengthen your wireless signal to cover any coverage holes.

The wireless network booster picks up your existing wireless network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wifi signal to increase it’s coverage.

Place the Wi-Fi network extender near the position where your wireless network signal from the SBBS internet router is becoming weaker.

Place it near where your Wifi network signal drops down to less than 2 bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to find where this is.

When did you last upgrade the SBBS internet router?

SBBS router upgrade

The SBBS and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to provide new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your SBBS broadband router is running on the latest software.

Most SBBS broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software update by simply logging on the SBBS broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you cannot do this, get in touch with SBBS and they will do this for you or guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.

As well as upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long period, it’s probably worth speaking to SBBS to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for SBBS broadband performance issues in your home and it’s more common with broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.

If you are unsure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact SBBS who will be able to carry out the appropriate line checks to check if there is a issue on the SBBS broadband connection.

Is it due to SBBS Internet congestion?

If you’re finding that the SBBS internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times e.g weekends and evenings, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should contact SBBS to check your minimum speed.
