Troubleshooting Seethelight internet speed problems
Before you begin troubleshooting the performance of your Seethelight broadband connection, we recommend that you perform a Seethelight Broadband Speed Test to measure your current internet speed.
It is a good idea to also find out the minimum download speed you have subscribed to from Seethelight.
You can find this info by checking your Seethelight broadband bill, your Seethelight contract or by contacting Seethelight.
Common causes of Seethelight’s slow broadband speed
Is it the Seethelight broadband that is running slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.
The speed issue could be due to the over-utilisation of your device’s resources e.g Memory/CPU and as opposed to a problem with Seethelight’s internet connection.
If you are on a laptop then you may use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory utilization.
On other device, you should try restarting the device which should hopefully kill all applications that may have been using up your device resources.
Run the Seethelight Speedtest on your computer and your mobile to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.
This should hopefully provide you with more information to work with in terms of if the issue is with your PC/Smartphone or the Seethelight broadband connection.

Is the Wifi network the cause of the slowness?
The cause of the performance problem may be your wireless and not the Seethelight internet connection.
You can rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your computer directly into the Seethelight broadband router with a network cable and then run the Seethelight Speed checker again.
If the speed test result is better when you are connected via a network cable, this indicates that the issue could be with your internal wireless network.
A few other things to investigate:
- Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbours?
- Is your Wifi signal from the broadband router obstructed?
- Does your performance get better when you’re standing right infront of the Seethelight broadband router?
Who’s connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wi-Fi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How secure is your wireless network password? It may be time to change it.
Neighbors could be on your Wi-Fi network and eating up all the Seethelight speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Seethelight broadband connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities on your Seethelight internet connection.
There are three apps that you can potentially utlise to scan your Wifi network to see who is connected:
- Microsoft users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- wireless network troubleshooting tool WiFi Analyzer
The above software will scan your Wifi network and display a list of the everything on your wifi.
Should I get a wireless network booster for my Seethelight broadband?
If you discover that you have wireless black holes at your home, a wireless network extender also known as a Wifi Booster is the best fix to increase your Wifi signal to cover any black holes.
The Wifi extender simply picks up your existing Wifi signal just as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to increase it’s reach.
Position the Wifi network booster/extender where your Wifi signal from your Seethelight broadband router is starting to become weaker.
Place it near where your wireless signal drops down to less than 2 signal bars. Walk around your home with a smartphone to try and establish where this location is.
When did you last upgrade the Seethelight broadband router?
The Seethelight and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Always ensure that the Seethelight internet router is running on the latest software.
Most Seethelight broadband routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging into the Seethelight broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the update.
If you can’t do this, contact Seethelight and they will perform the upgrade for you or talk you through the process.
In addition to updating the software, if you have had hardware for a long period, it’s worth speaking to Seethelight to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most common cause for Seethelight broadband performance issues in your property and it’s more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.
If you are unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Seethelight who should be able to run the relevant connection checks to check if there is a issue on the Seethelight broadband line.
Is the issue due to Seethelight Internet congestion?
If you’re finding that the Seethelight broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends or during the evening, then it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should speak to Seethelight to find out your minimum speed.
