How to troubleshoot Seethelight broadband internet speed

Common causes of Seethelight slow internet performance

Is it your Seethelight broadband that is slow or is it your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You need to consider how many apps are concurrently running on your device that could be utilizing your system resources (mainly RAM memory and CPU) and/or your Seethelight internet bandwidth.

If you’re on a laptop then you can use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM usage.

On any other device you could try restarting the device which should hopefully kill all apps that may be running in the background.

Re-run the Seethelight speed test on your personal computer and your phone to see how the speedtest results compare between the two devices.

This should hopefully provide you with some info to work with in terms of whether the problem lies with your device or the Seethelight broadband connection.

Is your wireless network connection the problem?

The cause of the issue could be your wireless connection and not the Seethelight broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the Wifi network being the cause of the problem by connecting your computer directly into the Seethelight broadband router using a network cable and run the Seethelight speedtest again.

If the speed is better when you are connected via a network cable then this proves that the problem could be with the wireless connection setup.

Possible things to investigate are:

  • Are the Wireless channels you’re using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
  • Could your Wifi network signal from the router be obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when you’re standing directly in-front of the Seethelight broadband or wireless router?

Who is connected to my Wi-Fi network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured Guest wireless network?

Neighbors could be using your Wi-Fii network and using up all your Seethelight bandwidth downloading/uploading or even streaming netflix! Worse still, they could be carrying out illegal activities which will all lead to your connection.

Do I need a Wi-Fi network Booster for my Seethelight broadband?

If you find that you have Wifi black holes in your home, then a Wifi extender also know as a Wifi Booster is the fix to boost your signal. They are readily available online from around £15.

The Wifi network booster simply picks up your existing wireless signal just as it is starting to become weak and then re-transmits the Wifi signal at a more stronger rate to extend it’s reach.

Place the Wi-Fi network booster/extender where your wireless network signal from the Seethelight broadband router is starting to become weak.  Approxiametly where your Wifi signal drops down to two bars. Use your mobile phone to determine where this is.

When was the last time you upgraded your Seethelight broadband router?

The Seethelight and openreach infrastructure is constantly being upgraded to support new features (some customer facing and others internal).  Ensure that your Seethelight broadband router has the most up to date software.

Most Seethelight broadband routers allow you to perform the software update by logging into the Seethelight broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, contact Seethelight and they will be able to either do this for you or guide you through how to do it depending on the Seethelight router model you have.

In addition to updating the software, if you have had the same router for a long time, it’s worth talking to Seethelight to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the problem external (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for Seethelight broadband performance issue in your home and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact Seethelight who will be able to carry out the appropriate line tests to check if there is a issue on the Seethelight internet connection.

Is it due to Seethelight Broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the Seethelight internet connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. weekends and during the evening, it may be because of congestion during peak times.

You should contact your Seethelight to understand if the service you have subscribed to has a guaranteed speed or is  a contended ‘first come first serve’ service with no minimum speed guaranteed.

After the issue has been resolved either by yourself or Seethelight, retest your internet connection using  at least 2 independent speedtests such as the one here and Ookla broadband speedtester to ensure the issue is resolved.
