How to troubleshoot Seethelight internet speed issues

Seethelight Internet Speedchecker - Slow Internet speed

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your Seethelight internet connection, we suggest that you run a Seethelight Broadband Speedtest to benchmark your current broadband speed.

It is a good idea to also confirm the minimum download speed that you are paying for from Seethelight.

You can find this info by checking a Seethelight broadband bill, your Seethelight contract or by contacting Seethelight.

Possible causes of Seethelight’s slow broadband performance

Is it the Seethelight internet connection that is running slow or could it be your device (PC/laptop/phone)?

You may need to consider how many apps are currently running on your device.

The speed issue could be due to the over utilisation of your system resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU Processor and as opposed to an issue with Seethelight’s internet connection.

If you are on a PC then you may use the task manager to check your CPU and RAM utilization.

On other device, you could try rebooting the device which hopefully will terminate all applications that may be using up system resources.

Re-run the Seethelight Speed checker on your computer and your mobile phone to check how the speedtest results differ between the two devices.

Hopefully this should give you some info to work with in terms of if the problem lies with your PC/Smartphone or the Seethelight broadband connection.

Is your Wifi network the reason for the issues?

The cause of the performance problem could be your wireless network as opposed to the Seethelight broadband connection.

You could rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your computer directly into the Seethelight broadband router using an ethernet cable and then run the Seethelight Speed test again.

If the speed is better when you’re connected via an ethernet cable, this shows that the issue may be with your wireless network.

Possible things to look further into:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the broadband router obstructed?
  • Does the performance get better when you’re stood directly infront of the Seethelight wireless router?

Exactly who’s connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been shared? Do you have an un-secured Wifi network? How secure is your wireless network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbours could be on your Wifii network and eating up all the Seethelight bandwidth by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Seethelight internet connection! Worse still, they could be conducting illegal activities using your Seethelight internet connection.

There are two applications that you can use to scan your wireless network to check who’s connected:

Both apps will scan your wireless network and display a list of the connected devices.

Do I need a Wi-Fi network booster for my Seethelight broadband?

You may discover that there are Wi-Fi black spots at your house, a wireless network extender also know as a Wifi Booster is the best fix to strengthen your wireless signal to cover any coverage gaps.

The Wifi network extender simply picks up your existing wireless network signal just as it is starting to become weaker and re-transmits the Wifi network signal to increase it’s coverage.

Position the wireless extender where your wireless network signal from your Seethelight internet router is becoming weaker.

Position it approximately where your Wi-Fi network signal is dropping down to less than 2 signal bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to try and establih where this location is.

When was the last time you upgraded the Seethelight internet router?

The Seethelight and broadband infrastructure in general are frequently updated to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Always ensure that your Seethelight internet router is running the latest software.

The majority of Seethelight internet routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging on the Seethelight broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the update.

If you cannot do this, get in touch with Seethelight and they will perform the upgrade for you or guide you through the process.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had hardware for a long time, it is worth talking to Seethelight to request for a hardware upgrade.

Is the fault outside your property (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely cause for Seethelight broadband performance issue in your home and is more common for internet broadband connections that are delivered through cooper phone lines.

If you’re not sure if this is relevant in your case, you should contact Seethelight who should be able to run the relevant line checks to see if there is a fault on the Seethelight internet line.

Is the issue due to Seethelight broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the Seethelight broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g over weekends and during the evening, it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should contact Seethelight to check your minimum speed.
