Troubleshooting Signal broadband performance problems

Before starting to troubleshoot the performance of your Signal broadband connection, we recommend that you run a Signal Internet Speed Test to confirm your current connection speed.
It is a good idea to also confirm the minimum download speed that you on your broadband package from Signal.
You can get this information by checking your Signal broadband bill, your Signal contract or by contacting Signal.
Common causes of Signal’s slow internet performance
Is it the Signal internet connection that is running slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?
You need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.
The speed issue could be due to the over-utilization of your system resources i.e RAM/CPU and not a problem with Signal’s broadband connection.
If you are on a PC then you can use the task manager to see your CPU and RAM utilization.
On any other device, you should try rebooting the device which hopefully will kill all apps that may be hogging system resources.
Re-run the Signal Speedtest on your computer and your phone to see how the speed test results differ between the 2 devices.
This should hopefully give you more information to work with in terms of if the problem is with your device or the Signal broadband connection.

Is your wireless network the cause of the performance issue?
The cause of the performance problem may be your Wifi as opposed to the Signal broadband connection.
You can rule out the Wi-Fi network by simply connecting your computer directly to the Signal broadband router using a network cable and then run the Signal Speedtest again.
If the speed is better when you are connected via an ethernet cable, this indicates that the problem may be with your Wifi network.
A number of things to look further into:
- Are the WiFi channels that you’re using for your Wifi network (SSID) overlapping with the neighbors?
- Is the Wifi signal from the broadband router obstructed?
- Does the speed get better when you’re standing directly infront of the Signal internet router?
Who’s connected to my wireless network?
Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an open Wifi network? How strong is your wireless network password? It could be time to change it.
Neighbours could be on your Wi-Fi network and eating up all your Signal speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos over your Signal internet connection! Worse still, they may be conducting illegal activities over your Signal broadband connection.

Here are three applications to utlise to analyze your Wi-Fi network to see who’s connected:
- Microsoft users can use Wireless network watcher
- IOS users can use whoFi (who is on my Wifi)
- WiFi scanning tool WiFi Analyzer
The above apps scan your Wi-Fi network and display a list of the everything on your wifi.
Do I need a Wifi booster for my Signal broadband?
If you find that there are Wi-Fi coverage holes at your house, a Wi-Fi network extender aka a Wifi Booster may be the best solution to boost your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black spots.
The Wifi network booster simply picks up the existing Wifi network signal just as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the Wi-Fi network signal to extend it’s reach.
Position the wireless network booster where your wireless signal from your Signal broadband router is starting to become weaker.
Position it near where your wireless signal drops down to less than 2 bars. Walk around your property with a tablet to find where this location is.
When was the last time you upgraded the Signal broadband router?

The Signal and broadband infrastructure, in general, are frequently upgraded to provide new features and improve reliability as technology evolves. Always ensure that your Signal broadband internet router is running the most up-to-date software.
The majority of Signal broadband routers will allow you to carry out the software upgrade by simply logging on the Signal broadband router and simply clicking a button to perform the upgrade.
If you can’t do this, get in touch with Signal and they will be able to perform the upgrade for you or alternatively, guide you through performing the upgrade yourself.
As well as updating the software, if you have had router for a long period, it’s worth speaking to Signal to ask for a router upgrade.
Is the root cause of the issue outside your property (at the exchange)?
This is probably the most likely reason for Signal broadband performance problems in your property and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered using copper phone lines.
If you’re not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Signal who will be able to run the relevant line tests to check if there is a fault on the Signal broadband line.
Is it due to Signal broadband congestion?
If you are finding that the Signal broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods i.e. over weekends and evenings, it may be because of congestion during peak times.
You should contact Signal to check your guaranteed speed.
