Troubleshooting Signal broadband performance problems

Before you begin troubleshooting the speed of your Signal broadband connection, we suggest that you perform a Signal Broadband Speedtest to measure your current broadband speed.

It is also a good idea confirm the guaranteed minimum download speed you on your broadband package from Signal.

You can get this information by checking your Signal broadband bill, your Signal contract or by contacting Signal.

Common causes of Signal’s slow broadband speed

Is it your Signal broadband that is slow or could it be your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to consider the number of applications are currently running on your device.

The speed problem may be due to the over-utilization of your device’s resources e.g RAM/memory/CPU Processor and not an issue with Signal’s internet connection.

If you are on a laptop then you can use the task manager to check your CPU and Memory usage.

On other device, you should try restarting the device which should hopefully kill all programs that may have been hogging your device resources.

Re-run the Signal Speed checker on your personal computer and your mobile to see how the speed test results compare between the 2 devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with more information to help determine whether the problem is with your PC/Smartphone or the Signal internet connection.

Is the wireless network the issue?

The cause of the performance problem may be your internal Wifi network as opposed to the Signal broadband internet connection.

You could rule out the wireless network by connecting your computer directly to the Signal broadband router with a network cable and then run the Signal Speed test again.

If the performance is better when you are connected by an ethernet cable, this proves that the issue may be with the internal wireless network.

A number of things to check:

  • Are the Wireless channels that you are using for your wireless network network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbours?
  • Is the wireless signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does your speed improve when you’re stood directly in-front of the Signal broadband router?

Who’s connected to my Wifi network?

Have you checked that your wireless network password has not been shared? Do you have an open wireless network? How complex is your Wi-Fi network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbours could be on your Wifi network and eating up all your Signal speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or videos on your Signal internet connection! Worse still, they could be conducting illegal activities over your Signal internet connection.

This is probably the most likely reason for Signal broadband performance problems in your property and is more common for broadband connections that are delivered using phone lines.

If you are not sure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Signal who should be able to run the relevant connection checks to see if there is a problem on the Signal broadband connection.

Is the issue because of Signal broadband congestion?

If you’re finding that the Signal internet connection speed in your area is slows down during certain times i.e. over weekends or during the evening, it may be due to congestion during peak times.

You should speak to Signal to check your minimum speed.
