Troubleshooting Sky internet performance issues

Sky Internet Speedchecker - Slow Internet speed

Before you start troubleshooting the performance of your Sky internet connection, we recommend that you run a Sky Broadband Speed Test to measure your current connection speed.

You may also want to confirm the minimum download speed you on your broadband package from Sky.

You can find this information by checking a Sky broadband bill, your Sky contract or by contacting Sky.

Potential causes of Sky’s slow internet speed

Is it your Sky internet connection that is running slow or is it your device (laptop/smartphone/PC)?

You need to consider the number of applications are running on your device.

The performance issue could be due to the over-utilisation of your system resources i.e RAM/memory/CPU and as opposed to an issue with Sky’s broadband connection.

If you’re on a PC then you can use the task manager to see your Processor and Memory utilisation.

On other device, you should try rebooting the device which should hopefully terminate all programs that may be using up your systems resources.

Re-run the Sky Speed checker on your computer and your mobile to check how the results differ between the 2 devices.

Hopefully this should provide you with some info to work with in terms of if the problem lies with your device or the Sky internet connection.

Is your Wifi the reason for the issues?

The cause of the performance issue could be your Wifi network and not the Sky internet connection.

You could rule out the Wifi by connecting your PC directly to the Sky broadband router with a network cable and then run the Sky Speed checker again.

If the performance improves when you are connected by a network cable, this proves that the issue could be with your Wi-Fi network.

A few other things to look further into:

  • Are the WiFi channels that you are using for your wireless network (SSID) overlapping with your neighbors?
  • Is the Wi-Fi network signal from the wireless router obstructed?
  • Does the performance improve when your are stood right in-front of the Sky wireless router?

Exactly who’s connected to my wireless network?

Have you checked that your Wifi network password has not been compromised? Do you have an un-secured wireless network? How secure is your wireless network password? It could be time to change it.

Neighbors could be using your Wi-Fi network and eating up all the Sky speed by downloading, uploading or even streaming music or video on your Sky internet connection! Worse than that, they may be carrying out illegal activities over your Sky broadband connection.

Sky WiFi issues

There are 3 applications that you can potentially use to analyse your Wi-Fi network to check who’s connected:

The above applications scan your wireless network and show you a list of the everything on your wifi.

Do I need a Wifi booster for my Sky broadband?

If you discover that there are Wi-Fi coverage holes at your home, a Wifi extender also known as a Wi-Fi Booster is the best solution to strengthen your Wi-Fi signal to cover any black spots.

The Wifi extender simply picks up your existing wireless signal as it is becoming weaker and re-transmits the wireless network signal to extend it’s reach.

Place the wireless network booster near the position where your wireless signal from the Sky internet router is starting to become weaker.

Position it approximately where your wireless network signal is dropping down to less than 2 bars. Walk around your home with a tablet to determine where this is.

When did you last upgrade the Sky broadband router?

Sky broadband router upgrade

The Sky and broadband infrastructure, in general, are constantly upgraded to support new features and improve performance as technology evolves.  Ensure that the Sky broadband router is running the most up to date software.

The majority of Sky internet routers allow you to carry out the software upgrade by logging on the Sky broadband router and simply clicking a button to do the upgrade.

If you can’t do this, get in touch with Sky and they will do this for you or talk you through the process.

In addition to upgrading the software, if you have had router for a long period, it’s worth speaking to Sky to ask for a hardware upgrade.

Is the cause of the problem external to your home (at the exchange)?

This is probably the most likely reason for Sky broadband performance issues in your property and is more common with broadband connections that are delivered via phone lines.

If you’re unsure if this is applicable to you, you should contact Sky who will be able to carry out the relevant connection tests to check if there is a fault on the Sky broadband line.

Is the issue because of Sky broadband congestion?

If you are finding that the Sky broadband connection speed in your area is slow during certain periods e.g over weekends and evenings, then it may be because of congestion during peak hours.

You should contact Sky to check your guaranteed speed.
